Present Tense vs. Past Tense

In one of my essays, I'm using an anecdote throughout the essay as a way to introduce certain elements of my topic. I want to use present tense to tell my story (makes it feel more alive), though my parents are a bit wary of the idea. "After all," they say, "this did happen in the past."

So, CC members, what advice do you have for me? Is present tense okay? Is it too big a risk? Is it a major, major no-no?

Stick with past tense. Present is too easy to sound amateurish.
