I feel sort of bad for the many posters asking about their essay ideas and they are often shot down as too personal or dangerous. I do it too… Doesnt this sort of prove that the essays (and by default the applications) are all a big show? No room for the weak, sad, quirky, clingy, vegans…

I think anything written for a college app, an internship, an etc. is a show… But not in a negative sense. You don’t want to emphasize anything negative about yourself. It’s giving off a good first impression in writing.
But yes, the applications are definitely a show, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
You don’t show up for a first date in your ugliest shirt. This piece of advice applies to applications.

You are selling yourself. If you think a college wants a weak, sad, quirky, clingy person, by all means, write an essay that reflects those qualities.
I get your point, but it’s not much different from trying to get a job. You put your best foot forward. A student always has the option of going to community college and transferring without having to submit “fake” essays about himself.
True… I saw a stream of essay posts and it just hit me that it is all a bit superficial.
