Essays!!

Will UT appreciate humor in essays? Will they appreciate someone being really "real" when writing their essays?
I've found that when writing mine, I'm not trying to impress. I'm just trying to be myself. In the end, they are less "scholarly" and more "me." I tell stories, I converse with my reader, I don't write the usual essay. Is that going to veer me away from getting accepted? (I'm out of state!)
Basically, what are they looking for in the essays submitted?

humor is great, it’ll help them remember you. I find it odd that you’re not “trying to impress.” Obviously you don’t want to turn this essay into an enumeration of accomplishments but you should definitely try to impress them with whatever writing prowess you have.

“Being you” is the entire point of writing a college admissions essay, you would be missing the entire point if you didn’t write from a personal viewpoint. I’m sure you know that the essay is the only meaningful personal touch an admissions committee usually sees on an application. That being said, this almost seems like a ■■■■■ thread.

Regardless, just write a good essay. Originality is always a plus. No college (including UT) places much store by a dull, detached essay anyway.

I guess I should’ve clarified… I’m not trying to impress by listing my accomplishments in my essays, but rather, highlighting something that people could see as rather insignificant, but definitely has defined me as a person. And I’m not using big words just for the sake of using big words, you know?

Idk, maybe I’m not making my point clear enough. Or maybe I just haven’t read enough example college essays to understand what originality is, and where my essays fall on that spectrum.

I don’t know if this will help, but I am pretty sure my essay was all that helped me get into UT. I had good grades, but nothing incredible. I had a lot of extra curriculars. My main essay was about cheese, because by the time I wrote it I was so sick of essays I decided to just do something random. I went through many drafts of different kinds of essays before I was able to write that one, so really just write and something good will eventually come out, it just might take a while. I’m also out of state.
