Establishing Residency!!!!!

What does an out of state student have to do to establish residency? And has anyone (OOS student) been successfully in doing so? I live right next door in Missouri

Don’t get your hopes up. Throughout the four years you will be presumed to be a resident where your parents live unless you establish you are independent of them which essentially requires your living and working for a full year in Illinois, supporting yourself and not getting any money from your parents for tuition, fees, or living expenses. See [University of Illinois > University-Wide Student Programs > Residency Status Regulations](University of Illinois > University-Wide Student Programs > Residency Status Regulations)

If my parents move to Illinois would I automatically qualify for instate tuition? Or would I have to wait?

I believe you’d have to wait for a year, even if they are able to move and obtain jobs here in Illinois. And now is not a good time to be selling a house in Missouri, or anywhere else for that matter.

The state of Illinois protects its in-state tuition like a hawk!

To establish residency your parents would have to move to the state, wait one year and then you would be able to enroll at the University.

Or you have to be declared independent by the state. Basically you would have to be at least 25 years old, move into the state for other purposes other than education and wait one year before enrolling at the university.

Or if your in the military, after you get out of service you have to declare Illinois as your new home state right away and the then the one year wait is waived and your considered “in-state”

On uiuc’s website it says that after my parents move to Illinois I “may become a resident at the beginning of the next term following the move”. What does the next term mean? The next semester or next year? And I guess I could still enroll at the university before the move.

Ramzfan13 - What you get on this website is opinions. They may be correct, and they may not be. If you want answers to U of I policy issues then call admissions and if they cannot answer definitively, they will know who can, and you’ll be directed there. I find it hard to believe that your parents would consider moving to Illinois, leaving your current home and their jobs behind for an annual $14,000/yr difference between the instate/out-of-state tuition and fee rates.
