Ethernet?

Trying to make certain D has all necessary computer cables...will she need an ethernet cable or is the entire campus wi-fi? (She'll be in McCormick.)

Wi-Fi is accessible everywhere on grounds (even outside) but she’ll probably want a plug-in cable for her desk. Wireless is going to be slower and if she has a big file to download or wants to stream something, ethernet is the way to go.

second what shoe said, i was always plugged in at brown but used wireless in classrooms/etc.

ALSO you can’t get wireless until you plug in to get a pki certificate i belive so you definitely need a cord for that. that might have changed but i’m not sure…

Thank you!

You don’t need wired to initially connect anymore, you can log in to the “Welcome to UVa Wireless” network and set up access. I’ll echo every else’s recommendation to bring ethernet, just in case, though.

Is Ethernet recommended for laptop users as well or just desktop?

No one has desktops haha

Is it recommended to bring a router also?

You definitely cannot have a router, why would you need one with the university’s wireless network already in place??

Need one at Grand Marc if you want to work outside of your bedroom. Connectivity there is not good.
