I know the Vassar website says that “Vassar provides both wired and wireless network access throughout the campus.” Have current students found the Wi-Fi to be adequate, or should I buy an Ethernet cable? Any help would be appreciated!
There are some spots in some dorms that don’t have great wifi. For some reason my son wouldn’t use the ethernet cable I bought him. It would have helped.
My D has had no trouble with the on-campus wi-fi. As momlax says, there are some random spots where it’s patchy, but they are limited and pretty well known. Unless your D/S has a room in one of those rare spots they really won’t need the ethernet cable- and as momlax found, the students view them sort of like pocket protectors in my parents generation: you can explain the practicality, but all they get are the optics! But- they sell them in the campus bookstore if D/S gets there & decide they want it. If you are packing for first year, don’t worry about it!
My daughter moved in on Tuesday (athletes move in early), and we got her Wifi connection set up and working with no problem; both computer and phone. Seems to work great. Make sure to follow the instructions here - http://computing.vassar.edu/network/encrypted.html - Note that when you download what they tell you to download (at least for Windows 8), it doesn’t all work exactly as the directions say…but it will all work and be fine.
If you find that you need an ethernet cable in your room, then do that, but assuming you want to take your computer with you, you’ll want the Wifi to be working also.
@stepay, hope it was a great day for you! congrats on launching your chick
@collegemom3717 - Thanks!
@stepay, my D’s roommate was part of the team with the early arrivers (which I think includes your D). She says that they are a very lively & energetic bunch. She’s enjoying it hugely- and says it feels like more than 2 years since she was the early arriver
@collegemom3717 - Yep, our daughter was an early arriver. Glad to hear that the time isn’t just flying by for your daughter. My daughter has enjoyed it a lot so far, and I expect that will be the case for her entire stay there, so I don’t want it to go by too quickly.
