Vice Admiral William P. Lawrence Ethics Award

Each semester 3/C Midshipmen take a core course in Ethics. As part of this course they write and submit a paper on a subject of their own choosing regarding Ethics (aprox. 500 Midshipmen each semester). As a part of the Stockdale Center the class of "81" has endowed and awards a stipend for the "best" essay submitted each semester of 3/c year. Course Instructors review the submitted essays and those chosen by the Instructors as the "best" are reffered to a nonpartisan review pannel. Finalists (usually about four or six) are invited to a dinner with the Superintendent and invited guests. At the dinner the winner of the Vice Admiral William P. Lawrence Ethics award is announced. They have to give an acceptance speech which might be worse than writing the paper. Next Dinner February 17, 2009.

Thank you for clarifying-
now that you mention it, I think a young lady from Staten Island was one of the finalists last year.

...and she just happens to be my daughter (Kaitlin Hady, 2/C 27th company).

It was quite an honor, and her mother and I were extremely proud of her. Kait was honored at a dinner where we were seated at a table with the Superintendent, his wife and other dignitaries. It was quite an evening!

Subsequently, Kaity was asked to speak at the Stockdale Center's 10th anniverary on 10/31/08 (see www.usna.edu/Ethics/Publications/WinterNewsletter.pdf) where she was introduced to other notables including Mr. Ross Perot, Mr. Sidney B. Stockdale (son of VADM Stockdale), and Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Donald C. Winter.

The Stockdale Center is an amazing resource for Mids, and the director (Col Arthur J. Athens, USMCR (Ret.)) is an incredible individual. I highly recommend all Mids to check it out.

P.S. Thank you for allowing me to brag a bit!

LOL.... and i love katiehady!!!! will send you a PM- welcome to CC, where we love our Mids and our Merlot! (hint hint!) ;)

Congratulations Phady001: That must have been a great experience. I only know about this award because my Mid is a finalist and told us that she has received a formal invitation to the dinner. How did you get to go to the dinner?? Was it on short notice?? Mid has not forwarded any information other than "by the way, I was selected" Her mother could kill her.

Thanks for the information. My Mid is one of the finalists this year and we were wondering about it. Unfortunately, we will not be able to attend. We live on the west coast and figured out we would be able to see our Mid only for the dinner, so.............. instead we will go the the Firstie (now Second Class) Parents weekend.
Like to add my kudos to Kaity!

AF6872 We received an invitation in the mail last week.

tttdz:

Maybe Cheeburger Cheeburger for your Mid if we get there. It is only five hours from driveway to gate one. Have not received invite yet. Maybe you received invitation because yours won the whole enchilada

My apologies for this delayed response. Congratulations to tttdz and AF6872! (and thanks for the kudos!) You should be very proud, since your Mid's essays were selected from amongst several hundred entries. If you have read up on this award, you will have noted that the first step in the process is to have the essay selected and submitted by one of the class instructors. A select set of essays is sent for review by an outside panel comprised distinguished educators/leaders. So by the time your Mid was selected as a finalist, it would have been read by many learned, wise individuals. That, in itself, is something to be very proud of.

All of the finalists are invited to the awards dinner, but as far as I know, only the parents of the winner are included. It is a wonderful evening. My wife and I were busting with pride, as dozens and dozens of those in attendance showered on our Mid (and us as well!). We were somewhat overwhelmed, in that we were not aware of the distinction of this award, or what an incredible event it would turn out to be. Our Mid (while usually modest anyway), kind of downplayed it from the beginning.

Again, congratulations to you, and your Mids!

Asked and Answered by Phady001. Congratulations tttdz. All Mids are deserving of our respect and admiration. I can truly say that I have never met a finer group of young adults.

^^^ well if your Mids are anything like Midn 2C Kaity Hady, you are in for a real treat! Congratulations to all!
