In terms of schools like stanford and the Ivys, especially stanford, would being hispanic be a major advantage, since theyve got a serious overrepresentation of Asians (no offense, but I've never seen more Asian people in my life than when I visited stanford).
I mean hispanic, come on that's got to be a major plus, right? More specifically, Cuban. Right? Cuban's a big advantage? Or isn't it?

you know you want to answer

oh btw, if youre exactly half caucasian and half hispanic, is it ok to only check off hispanic. The requirements for being considered Hispanic are at least 1 grandparent be hispanic, so i dont think it would be a misrepresentation at all

it is rather important

I know that Hispanic is a plus, but I heard that Cubans aren't as much as say Mexican. I doubt you'll get any extra pluses at Stanford.

w/e, im just happy to be an URM

I wasn't downing URMs, just saying though...I answered what you asked bluntly.

Are all minorities good? Like being Russian Jewish for example?

idk, but i'll tell you what an EXCELLENT minority combo is. Black-Hispanic. I knew a black cuban jew, got into every school he applied to.

Being a Russian or a Jew isn't a minority group at competitive colleges.

Relax i know you weren't downing anybody, I was just thinking out loud.

It is not a "major advantage" being hispanic alone if you haven't overcome significant adversities in your life.

yes it is. It makes a huge difference without any kind of social or financial struggle.

being a URM does help...but because most Hispanics in the US are either Cuban or Mexican...it would help more if you were like from Uruguay or something...a lesser represented Hispanic

Hispanics and Afro-americans do have a huge advantage, a bit less than 10 to 20 yrs ago though. As for asians any attempt to cap the number of asians via reverse discrimination (as the UCAL system attempted to do) will be challenged in court.

Dropping the SAT is the next end-around the major elites colleges are considering to limit asians and increase (invariably) less qualified "disadvantaged" groups

I wonder when college-bound parents will calculate rarest type of URMs and process genetic modification of child to that standard.

Yes, it will be a big plus.

Being a Russian Jew will never help you, unless you literally grew up in a shtetl. Eastern European Jews are overrepresented at pretty much every top US school. No disrespect, it's just the truth... I'm an Eastern European Jew myself.

" As for asians any attempt to cap the number of asians via reverse discrimination (as the UCAL system attempted to do) will be challenged in court."

Really? or is it only to public schools or what?

If it could be challenged, all the elite schools would have been sewed. However, it's so inscrapable that I'm sure they can always find a reason to cover up the dirty work.

Citation, do you believe in Santa? How do you explain that the private colleges take the exact same percentage year after year?

OP, yes it's an advantage. Keep in mind though that their are a huge number of hispanics in CA, and Stanford is a top choice for them. It's more of an advantage in places like the South and MW.
