Ethnicity and Admissions

I'm mostly Asian.

My family ate dinner with one of my dad's friends yesterday, and his son (also Asian) is listing his ethnicity as white because he said that in his experience at the University level, his son will be compared against other Asians instead of the entire admission pool, so that the University will have the proper racial mix.

My mom is strictly prohibiting me putting Asian down under demographics on the Common App now. Can anyone else verify this?

You can leave it blank because that part is optional. And your dad’s friend’s son is correct; they value your application with other Asians, and thus will work against you.

But he can’t lie, Asians are Asians, not whites.
Putting white or Asian will not increase your chance unless youre African American, Hispanic and Native American.

I guess I’ll just leave it blank. It’s surprising to hear something like that so late in the game and not from a university.
