Hi, do you know if Uchicago (and other private schools) distinguishes between East Asians and South Asian, or do they just use the "Asian" bubble in the common app. Also, if a person applies as both asian and white, how is their ethnicity considered?

This is an interesting question. When my son was filling out common app, I actually thought about asking it too. Any one?

If it is a highly selective school with holistic admissions, the process is typically opaque enough that those outside the admissions committee are unlikely to be able to find anything other than sparse anecdotal evidence, and even for someone on the inside, there may not be any strict policies. (And that doesn’t just go for race or ethnicity, but for all of the applicants’ attributes.)

^^thanks, ucbalumnus.

To OP, though personally I’d like to know the answers, but I would not worry about it. Don’t worry things that you can’t control, instead embrace it. Good luck to you!
