Which school would be better for biology, U of Oregon or Oregon State? Also, which school is more generous with merit scholarships?

You would be fine at either for biology. OSU has more of a science/tech/ag focus, but UO seems to be more popular with pre-med students. You would not be lacking in biology whichever one you choose.

It's probably more of a cultural difference, I think. Have you visited both schools? I know students who just quickly preferred one over the other, but it's always a toin coss to predict which way they go. I have heard from more than a few, though, that UO seems like a bigger school. OSU isn't really much smaller in terms of enrollment numbers, but it somehow feels smaller to some students. Eugene feels like a little city, Corvallis more like a mid-sized town.

Anyway, you should visit, I think. It will probably be more of a subjective call than something practical and clear cut.

I don't know about the merit scholarships and how they compare. My guess is that they would be more or less the same. Would love to hear more specifics if anyone has them.

My daughter applied to both and received more merit at OSU that UO....but she still chose UO because it was better for her major. She really liked both schools though, and applied to OSU because she was considering an Entrepreneur major, but decided to go with Art. I liked Eugene better than Corvallis, but both campuses were nice. I agree that you should visit....The people at OSU were soooo nice. They even had a sign welcoming us to our tour (personalized with name and town) outside of the office. There was a lot to like about both schools.
She is very happy at UO, but I don't think she could have gone wrong either way.

Some folks believe that OSU is stronger in the life sciences. In particular, it is well established that OSU's marine science departments are much better than that of U of Oregon. OSU alumni hold Marine Biologist jobs on many college faculties throughout the nation. You don't see as many UO graduates among the faculty at biology departments.

Which has a better engineering (mech or aero)?

U of O doesn’t have an engineering department…
