I love this thread- so much has happened since I last checked it out. I am going to order the car cane right now. I also want the egg cooker but might wait until it goes back to Prime. Thanks everyone!
“I make a dozen hard boiled eggs at once…for the week. I boiled the water, put the eggs in for 14 minutes… immediately rinse in coldest water…done.”
I would, too, but Mr. does not eat cold hard boiled eggs. It takes a long time for them to get up to room temperature! And we only have 30 min max for breakfast.
What do prime panties look like? Anything like the CC panties?? http://www.cafepress.com/collegeconf.176648587
I also got my egg cooker for $6.99 with Prime shipping – I think the issue is that Amazon is now sold out, so the link for the same product now goes to an outside vendor, who doesn’t offer the prime shipping. I can see that my order said it was shipped by Amazon LLC, but the vendor is now showing as “Geroys” … so for those who don’t have their egg cookers yet… I’d suggest waiting & watching.
Here’s a tip: put the egg cooker in your Amazon cart but then put “save for later” - it will be held in reserve and you will see notices of price changes --so that’s a good way to monitor to see when it gets back down to 6.99
And yes, I made my egg - 8 minutes, quite good!
@thumper1 Yes, if your intent for the eggs is using them cold in salads and such, then doing a bunch all at once is wise. I love cold sliced eggs on a lettuce salad, particularly with ranch dressing and cracked pepper…yum.
For those who want a warm hard-boiled egg for breakfast than this daily MW alternative would work.

I've discovered that the key to a delicious egg is proper cooking. Eggs should not be hard boiled to death.>>

Right, this morning the eggs I made in the MW using the “one less minute” method, but letting them sit longer post-MW yielded eggs that were “just short” of being what many of us consider hard-boiled. The whites were fully cooked, but the yolks were still “bright yellow” and just short of that more “chalky” result. (Chalky probably isnt the best description, but just short of that point where the yolks will easily “break apart” into little pieces).
I would have never considered the microwave as a place to cook eggs but I think I’ve been sold. I will wait till the price drops.
I don’t need it but I bet I’m not the only one who has put eggs on to boil and totally forgot. Not a pretty sight.
mom60, no, you are not the only one!!!
Target.com has it for the low price. If you have a red card then free shipping.
Yes, we have had incidents where we left eggs to boil and forgot about them. One of them involved a fire department visit–yikes! (We weren’t home.) The other involved our property manager. Both were a big mess, but the pots still works fine, despite the abuse and neglect by us.

Yikes! Did you turn them on and leave the house?
Now that we’re aging, I am very scared that I might leave something on the stove. I wish that stoves had a built-in option that when you turned the heat on, it will turn off after a certain determined number of minutes…or some other fall back.
My MIL had to move into a light level of assisted living simply due to that issue…she was forgetting that she was cooking things on the stove.
I always use the oven timer, otherwise I would probably forget them. BTW I put the eggs in Cold water, bring water to the boil, then put the lid on and turn the flame off. Leave for 23 minutes, then put in cold water, then peel. I don’t boil the eggs for 23 minutes, or they would be rubbery and the yolks would be dark and yucky. Betty Crocker taught me to use this method.
Reading this thread is making me crave some eggs right now!!!
I boiled a dozen the old fashioned way today. Peeling though is not fun and enough to make me want to spring for the microwave cooker which results in easily peelable eggs.
@madison85 try one of these tips…
There are several ways people tout as the quick and easy way to peel a hard boiled egg.
Popular, classic methods include:
– Tapping the broad end of the egg with the back of a spoon, breaking the air pocket and allowing you to get underneath the membrane so the shell slides off more easily.
– Peeling while holding under cool running water.
And the two that our Chief Executive Angel, Josh, kitchen-tests:
– Peeling by shaking in a lidded bowl of water or in a glass of water.
– Adding 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the water when boiling the eggs.
and here’s some more…

304 post lol....I can't remember what I wrote there, but it was not a bad word. Another word I could have used was crumbly. Now, I've got to remember what word was bleeped out.
edit, I just remembered. the word I used was chalky. is that a bad word here on CC???
Wait…now it’s not being bleeped out here, but it is in 304???
ok…crazy…now it is being bleeped out. I promise you, it’s not a bad word. It’s the white stick you use to write on a blackboard.
Thanks! I have tried the tapping the broad end combined with peeling under cold water while using eggs 1 week after purchase. I will experiment with more tomorrow.
Why would c-h-a-l-k-y be bleeped out?
I’ve heard that steaming eggs makes eggs easier to peel and makes it easier to achieve the fully-set-whites yet slightly runny yolks that are so hard to attain thru boiling. Could that be the secret of our new favorite gadget? That it steams? And can the chemists explain why that would make any difference whatsoever? Calling on @bunsenburner!!
PS i havent bought the gadget yet; I’m still not convinced it is not the placebo effect that is leading to the easier-to-peel conclusions. We need some double-blind-placebo controlled studies here! BB, do the cats know how to work the microwave? Is Mr. B up for peeling lots of eggs?

I have no idea. Maybe it has some kind of double meaning that we old folks don’t know about.
lol…I’ll see what Urban Dictionary says.
edit…oh my…it’s a crude word for a white person?
"BB, do the cats know how to work the microwave? Is Mr. B up for peeling lots of eggs? "
LOL!!! These cats will learn to work anything if it will put tuna on their plates. Alas, MW does not do it. I do not think Mr. B peeled a single egg since we got together… and that was close to 3 decades ago. He says there are 2 things he would not do… the other is vacuuming.
Anyway…
