Title says it all. Which European universities (especially non-british ones) enjoy a reputation for engineering that is equivalent to American top-notchs? Which ones do you know?

I would say that no Engineering program in the World can match the big 4 (Cal, Caltech, MIT and Stanford) in the US. That's because in most other countries, think tanks are not part of universities but rather, private research institutes. In the US, the top researchers work in University campuses.

However, some of the top Engineering schools in Europe (as good as top 10 Engineering schools in the US), include:

Imperial College (London)
Ecole Polytechnic (Paris)
Swiss Federation Institute of Technology (Zurich)
Technical University (Munich)

Those four universities are on par with Michigan, UIUC and Cornell for Engineering.

what about business? What universities in Europe come close to HYPSM, the ivies, Ross, Berkeley, and Stern?

At the undergraduate level, I don't think any European Business program compares to the top US programs. At the MBA level, INSEAD in Paris, IMD in Switzerland and London Business School in London are considered excellent.
