Evening classes as a freshman?

My math and chemistry classes in my first semester in college only had available spaces in the evening. I'm not sure if slots will open up for morning/afternoon spaces later on, so I'm assuming a worst-case scenario where I'm stuck in my current schedule.

At the moment, I'm lined up for 5:00PM Calculus II classes on MTWTh, and an 8:00PM Chemistry class on TWTh, with TTh classes going until 9PM and W going on until 10PM(!). The registration website says there are no open times for those classes during the day.

I've had to adjust my entire schedule to noon/afternoon-ish classes to compensate for what would be an otherwise ridiculous sleep schedule, since most of the reasonable late morning times for other courses I plan to take this semester have been filled, to my knowledge.

My question is: Should this schedule (essentially, no classes starting before noon, and some classes lasting until 10PM) worry me considering this is my first semester in college? I'd like to hear from someone who's taken some evening classes and can compare them to morning/afternoon classes, if possible.

Thanks for your time!

There were labs at my school that were until 11 o’clock at night on Fridays. It was all freshmen who were stuck in those. It happens.

Anyways, if you’re worried about evening classes, I would definitely call the departments and see if there is any way you can get an override into an earlier class. I would also constantly be checking for class openings. If there is an Add/Drop day at your school (the last day to add or drop a class, usually in the first week of classes), I would look on that day for openings and if there’s a final day that tuition has to be paid for or else classes get dropped, I’d look that day.

Your calculus class is probably doable, but that Chemistry class might really suck for you. Definitely check with the Math and Chemistry departments and see if there’s any way to get an override.

@AUGirl
My school is actually USC Columbia, small world! I’m not too worried about Calculus II, but I would definitely like to override Chemistry if that’s an option.

The folks at orientation stressed that the particular Chemistry class I needed was filled except for evening classes, but I get the feeling that more will open considering there are nearly two more weeks of orientation dates on the horizon. Does USC, in particular, open registration for classes gradually or weekly, or is it a first-come, first-serve process from day one?

I had a7:30pm-10:30pm history class.

Just best to get it out of the way now.

I would highly advise changing your schedule if you can. Evening classes themselves are little different than morning / afternoon ones, but I think one important difference is that you’ll be in class while most other people are done for the day. Consequently, other people will be busy with extracurriculars and events, which generally start at 6 or 7 at my school. You don’t want to miss out on joining a great club because it conflicts with chemistry.

TuftsStudent, good advice but if it delays graduation to put off these classes then I say take your lumps for one semester. I think these late classes are non-existent once you get into your major classes.

Something told me that you were going to be at USC. lol Maybe it was the fact that USC seems to be the only school I know of that has classes so gosh darn late.

Since I now know that you’re going to Carolina, I can give you some specifics.

A) The people at Orientation don’t really know what they’re talking about half of the time.
B) Your advisor will probably change and also probably has no idea what they’re doing.
C) Advisors have no idea what they’re doing.

CALL the Chemistry department and ask for an override. What are you taking? 111? There are a lot of students taking that and they may be able to override you into it since it is a several hundred student class.

Check this schedule out: [USC: Office of the University Registrar: Academic Calendars: Spring 2011 to Fall 2018](<a href=“University Registrar - University Registrar | University of South Carolina”>University Registrar - University Registrar | University of South Carolina)
August 29 is the last day to add/drop a course. Since there are hundreds of students in Chem 111, at least one space should open up. Constantly check VIP on that day for an open space. One WILL open up. The question is whether or not you will be checking at the right time.

Post on the Facebook Page for your class to see if anyone is considering dropping it or if anyone would like to switch with you. If they are, you can schedule a time for them to drop the class and you to quickly pick it up at some random hour.

[Paying for School: The Office of Bursar](<a href=“My Bill - Bursar's Office | University of South Carolina”>My Bill - Bursar's Office | University of South Carolina) On August 24, students who haven’t paid tuition will be dropped from all of their classes. Check this day too. Since it’s such a big class, you should probably be able to get something.

As far as classes, it usually ends up being just first-come, first-serve, but seriously check VIP like five or ten times a day if you have to. Something will eventually come up, especially with such a large class.

As for evening classes at USC? They’re really popular. A lot of freshmen get placed into them. Most of my friends ended up having one, and even I’m scheduled for one next semester. You definitely will not be alone. For whatever reason, USC just has a ton of evening classes.

Thanks a ton for the advice, everyone! I appreciate the help.

@AUGirl
Thanks for the really informative post, I’m honestly surprised that there are so many ways around what seems like a dead-end issue. I’ve got the department’s number on my desk so I won’t forget to give them a call tomorrow and see if they can do anything to help. If not, I’ll be sure to try some of your other suggestions for nabbing a more convenient section.

Tom, if only it were so. I have class at 6:00 three days a week next semester, and one of my friends who is a senior compsci major has a 6:00 class MTWTh.

AUGirl’s advice seems pretty good, and one thing to take away from it is that school culture varies tremendously among schools. If a lot of freshmen have night class, then I’m sure you’ll be fine.

I wouldn’t even bother trying to switch your calculus section if it would mess up the rest of your schedule. 5:00 to 6:00 is a perfect time and it’s unlikely that anything will be happening yet on campus.

^That’s not exactly true. While it is common to have a class at night here or there, it doesn’t mean nothing happens in the evenings. Lots of clubs meet then. Also, I personally just wouldn’t want to have a class get out as late as 10 o’clock at night, especially if I had a Chemistry class and lived in Capstone/Columbia Hall or Bates/Bates West. All four are really big freshman dorms and it’s a long way to walk alone at night.

I agree the 5:00 or 6:00 class isn’t too bad, but that Chemistry is going to suck. And I don’t know if Op is a partier not (or planning on partying), but USC has the highest rate of students in the country to go out on Tuesday nights and a lot also go out on Thursday nights. Having class so late definitely would put a dent into that.

^Chances are if that is an all freshman class others will be walking back as well.
