for the fall im considering this schedule:

T-TH 8am - 9:25am chemistry
TH only 11:10am - 2:10pm chem lab
T-TH 4:20pm - 6:45pm japanese
T-TH 7:05pm - 9:30pm calc 1

im an incoming freshman and im going to community college. i don't live near the school, so i can't afford to waste gas driving back home in between breaks (though on the days when i don't have a lab i probably could) and am wondering if this schedule seems like too much for a first year?

im mostly concerned with japanese and calc. that was the only calc slot that had the good teacher, and they offer japanese a bit earlier but then id be stuck at school doing nothing for 2 hours in between classes and thought it'd be easier to just have em side by side.

i also however don't want to feel dead tired by the time calc rolls around, but the only other option is taking the class at a high school M-F in the morning, and i don't wanna drive here every day of the week just for an hour and a half of class. the other time slots offered at the college have bad teachers apparently.

Class number wise it’s not too much. Whether you are tired or not depends on when you go to sleep the night before. You are going to be in school for 13 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so sleep early on Mondays and Wednesdays. Use your gaps between classes productively—get some coffee, food, and do homework. You have around 3.5 hours on Thursdays and way more on Tuesdays. You could easily end up not having to do homework at home if you work during your breaks. That leaves you time to sleep or relax on the days you are off.

If I were you I’d see if I can get back from school on Tuesdays though. 9:25am to 4:20pm is around 7 hours… you could do work for a few hours then go home for lunch or something. If not, it will get pretty boring so bring fun stuff to do—books if you are a reader, a computer with movies and music, etc. You could also just go for a walk or something.

It’s doable and I’d argue it’s not “too much” because it’s only twice a week.

You have breaks in between, which will help. The problem is not going to be T-Th, but W, when all four of your classes will expect homework and reading to be completed for the next day’s class. Don’t schedule work or an internship on Wednesdays!

I had a semester where I had class 8 AM to 8:30 PM with no breaks one day a week (because I somehow thought it was a good idea to schedule two labs on the same day), and it made Wednesday nights stressful but it was doable. You’ll still have some decent gaps, like a 2 hr gap on your busy Thursday. You’ll be fine.
