This year I'm going to be a freshman a Western Michigan University and was originally going to major in Stage Managing. But I've decided I want to pursue a career in event planning. The closest thing to that would be organizational communications. Is it best to start organizational communications at WMU or switch to a school with an actual Event Planning major?

University of Central Florida (a school I was looking at this year) has an event planning major. Does anyone know how good it is/any other schools with strong programs for this?

Thanks!

You honestly don't need to go to college for this. You can walk into an event planning place tomorrow and get a job. Try working for one this summer and see if it still interests you in September.

Thanks for the response, but can you please explain your reasoning behind your opinions?

ps, I'd love to intern or work someplace for it, but I'm a sailing instructor 8-6, 5 days a week. plus two nights a week closing at starbucks after, all sunday at starbucks and coaching color guard one night a week!

My D is seeking a degree in Event Planning. We limited the schools to east coast. UCF and Florida Gulf Coast University have Event Planning majors.

Other schools that have Hospitality majors with Event Planning emphasis are:

Temple University
East Carolina University
Florida State University
University of Florida

If Western Michigan offers courses in event planning, you may not have to move out-of-state to get an actual major in Event Planning. Take the courses available at your current university and get internships (very important). That will help you secure a post-college job. Most event planners do not graduate with a major in event planning.
