Okay, I'm a senior in high school in CT.
I want to get the hell out of CT.

I'm not exactly sure of my college plans for this upcoming fall (2012). I'm on the fence about either a community college or a university. But that's besides the point. I've been trying to figure out what exactly I want to major in realistically.
What I want to do is work behind the scenes, in the entertainment field. I've even considered Johnson & Wales University because of it's Sports/Entertainment/Event Management major... However I'm not too sure that'll actually get me somewhere in life. I want a major I can get a job in. A major I will get paid, live comfortably, TRAVEL, and be satisfied.
I was thinking maybe Business or Communications, but I have no idea what I would even do with those degrees.
I was even considering Education because it's such a common job, you could work anywhere with an Education's degree.
For a long time I've just had a pathetic fantasy of what I want my life to be like. I pictured living in California, working with Models and Actresses, behind the scenes. Kinda what Lauren Conrad did in her show, The Hills. But "REALISTICALLY" what are the odds of that happening?! And if there are, what major is that? Any good schools for that?

I want to live in California or Florida.
I'm really having the hardest time with this. I don't know what to do anymore!

Your major doesn’t determine your career, nor does the location of your college determine where you will live for the rest of your life. The JOB will determine how much you get paid and travel.

The best thing to do is go to a school with a variety of majors that you are potentially interested in, then take classes in them and see which one you like the best. Do internships and make connections in fields that interest you. Then when you are a junior think about jobs that you may enjoy and start looking for them and applying in your senior year.

I would wager that the vast majority of event managers do not have degrees in event management. It’s not a major that’s everywhere. Event management relies primarily on connections you have to businesses. A business major or a communications major could be ideal for that, or hospitality at the schools that have that, but you could really major in anything as long as you develop the network you need (and the soft skills needed for that networking - presenting, writing, communication skills). You could major in philosophy and still be an event manager.

You should probably just select a college that’s a good fit for you otherwise, and decide when you get there. You may want to investigate potential colleges’ internship opportunities, especially location. It may be harder to get an internship in your field from rural Mississippi than it would from NYC. And although you can go anywhere during the summer, term-time internships are great and have far less competition than summer internships.

CT sucks, doesn’t it?

Realistically, what can you afford? What is your gpa? Have you already applied to colleges and/or heard back from any of them. If you haven’t actually applied to any colleges, it might be expecting too much for a college to do for you what you hope it will do. If you really want to live in California or Florida have you considered moving to one of those states, working for a year, and then apply to schools there? It might give you more time to figure out exactly what you’re best approach would be and would certainly give you more time to apply to colleges.
