You think its hard to get into Harvard and Yale? These colleges are godsends compared to IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) in India. Most Indian kids probably know about it but how bout the rest of you? It only has a 2% acceptance rate and the admissions exam is considered the hardest in the world. Check it out http://www.mathiit.com/PDF/IIT/IIT2004M.pdf By the way, the exam is for high school seniors.

holy moly, that's excessively difficult. What page are the math questions on? I only saw the solutions

math is near the end of the pdf right before the math solutions

If its that good, then why isnt it one of the top ten institutions/universities in the world?

i think it is. But it focuses only on engineering and math (absolutely no language or humanities) so it may not me considered "well rounded". It definitely is the best engineering school in the world (it has about 7 campuses throughout India)

And also, no calculators are allowed on the test.

Oh please not this again.

I bet you are Indian

YES! We have all heard of IIT....

just search on CC...

what fun! i can not imagine doing anything without my trusty calculator, but then again, a calculator would be useless to me on a test like that because for most of the questions i wouldnt even know where to start

That exam looks damn scary! And I did 3 years of college maths!

I bet even Harvard or Caltech students will cry if they have to take this!

i've heard of it on cc - the intel forum

but i'd waaaaaaay rather go to harvard than iit.. even for engineering.

to get in, they only look at students with great scores and school grades right? I bet most students there are uptight/extremely extremely competitve/ or mean lol

but if i was indian, i would kill myself to get there.

It takes like 10 minutes for the app to load!

The acceptance rate figures are a little bit misleading. To get into IIT, one must take certain tests, which many people sign up to take, but few people are well educated enough (in India) to do well on. It's a little bit like saying that all of the many people in the United States who sign up for the SAT I should be counted as applicants for Harvard, MIT, etc. Some people who sign up for college entrance tests are simply not top-college material, in any country.

Young people in the United States who do advanced work in science and math are much less impressed by the IIT tests, because they have learned the material necessary to do well on them. The IIT campuses are good engineering schools, no doubt about it, but it's not at all clear that they are the best engineering schools in the world or the hardest to get into or any of the other things that people in India like to say about them.

Good luck in your college applications, wherever you are applying.

uhh, those tests are for high school seniors. I doubt you wont any American high-schooler (very rare) to handle this test.

Haha, yep. There've been who knows how many threads on this. Every once and a while someone will bring it up...again.

Do you mean more than 50 write the exam for each spot?
I don't really see how you can compare that way... it's kind of like saying anyone that writes the SAT applied to H/Y/P. With the SAT you normally know what range of schools to apply to... if you have a 1000 SAT you wouldn't bother applying to any top schools whereas for IIT you don't know the results of the entrance exam until you write it. If H/Y/P and similar top schools in the US based admissions solely on one exam then they'd no doubt get a huge number of people writing those exams... even those who did extremely poorly in high school.

Anyway, selectivity is not always indicator of quality, but I suppose the fact that IIT is so selective expains why so many Indians want to come to American universities.

no calculator?! Wha....?
IIT is old news but it's still cool haha

What about English/Hindi scores? It's funny how much they emphasize math (those it's a tech school), but it isn't comparable to Harvard or Yale.

Yup, I've heard of the Illinois Institue of Technology.

i'm sure these problems are much easier with 4-5 years of rigorous, incredibly intensive training and prep under ur belt (makes SAT prep look like child's play).
