IITs - the truth from an Indian's perspective

So I’ve seen this around here a lot, in reply Indians’ chance threads:

“You have a good shot everywhere, but make sure you have options at home too. Definitely look at the IITs”

Ah yes, the IITs…the supposed jewels of tech schools all around the world, the pride of India.
Every Indian would love to get in right?

WRONG.

It’s time to get real.

The IITs are ridiculously difficult to get into. The entrance exam for admission this year is being held today. About 400,000 students are writing this exam for 6000 spots. That’s a friggin 1.5% acceptance rate. Yeah, it’s scary as hell.

The IITs are solely tech schools. Forget getting a liberal arts education here, even Caltech serves that purpose better. If you want IIT, you want hardcore engineering, no holds barred.

About getting into IIT…people go to these coaching institutes which can begin as early as 8th grade. I didn’t know the laws of motion in the eighth grade :S. For the next four years, people kinda sell their souls to get into IIT and have absolutely no lives. It’s quite sad, really. Of course, there are a few exceptions to the rule - check The Indian Thread on the International Students’ forum to meet a few ;).

Those are the basics. I kindly, kindly request all you guys to think before using the ‘definitely try for the IITs’ on all us Indians in the future. Thank you for reading my rant, and I would be more than happy to answer any other questions (my dad’s an IIT grad so I know a fair bit, although things were waaaaaaay different 30-odd years ago). Good day :).

Hah. I agree with you. I’ve seen so many IIT hopefuls basically go straight for tuition right after school and study from 4 pm to something like 2 am straight practically every day - Ivy League hopefuls don’t do that.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention - admission is based on nothing but your performance in that one entrance exam. EC’s, SAT scores, essays and school grades? Pfft, they don’t matter at all.

Admissions to IITs are also solely based on academics. No essay required, they don’t care if you are in the student government, they dont care if you are the star athelete in your school, they don’t even need teacher recommendations. They just need your academics. Lets not forget the fact that many seats are taken up by wierd quotas which makes it even more difficult to get in. IITs are not safeties by any standard. In fact, IIT probably makes places like UCLA and Williams look like safeties.

My friend always talks about how legit IIT tech is (hes indian).

1.5 acceptance rate makes HARVARD a safety.

“in tomjonesistheman’s pants” wth?

Lets not forget the large scale ragging that goes on in there.

Didn’t some guy get beaten to death as a part of ragging this year? Or was that medical college? What exactly is the point of that kind of ragging?

However, when you follow Indian candidates on these boards, especially those needing aid, the competition at the US colleges is brutal. If it’s not IIT, many need to have backups in India because the competition is just getting worse for the few spots with aid.

That’s true, but it’s hard to have a BACKUP in India when admission hinges completely on ONE exam score. A safety is a place you’re sure of - but how can you be sure of one score? What if you fall sick that day, or…there are a million things that could happen. The US has like 6000 universities. Surely one of those places can function as a safety in case the Indian ‘safety’ doesn’t work out.

Univ of New Orleans? :D

goes and Googles that

200 whoopee

excellent post tetris,i completely agree with u
According to me,IIT does not do justice with the profile of a student?..How can u estimate a students success index just on the basis of academics. Also when it comes to hardcore mathematics or quantum physics IIT’s are stagnating miserably…So its just pointless keeping a safety in India unless u are bounded with core skill of solving complex problems unable to think what will all this help me in the future…I was myself an IIT hopeful but when i visited IITK and other branches i found the environment totally different. There were hordes of people who actually thought they did not match up to IIT…After all its not the degree which matters but the skill, thoughts and will of the degree holder which takes him/her ahead in life…

It’s not even ‘just on the basis of academics’, it’s the basis of that one IIT entrance exam! So you can do brilliantly THROUGHOUT school exams and be extremely good at the subject but still not make it to IIT if you mess up that one entrance exam.

correct
if its ur day u bag ur dream, otherwise u sit and think *** have u done these yrs…studying…lol
gosh…its better to study in U.S.

Do you guys know about “the super 30”. In 2008, all 30 students from the super 30 got into IIT.

Source: I watched it on the Discovery Channel–the Asia-Pacific Network.

…
