IIT= Harvard + MIT + Princeton

CBS's '60 minutes' (most widely watched news program in the states) says
"Indian Institute of Technology = H + M + P"

Some guy was denied admission to IIT but got scholarship to MIT and Princeton.

I read this somewhere and wondering if it was true....anyone?

no that can't be right

Yes, I heard about IIT before. It is the most vigorous and exclusive college in the world.

no that can't be right

Well it is.

MIT, Harvard and Princeton doesn't give merit scholarships. Only need-based.

When they say that, they don't really MEAN IT. It's called exaggeration.

You can't even compare IIT to H & P, because they have different focus.

MIT > IIT^87 in almost every aspect.

"MIT>IIT^87"

i dont think so.. McKinsey & Co, the world's largest consulting firm, highers the most of its students from the Indian Institute of Tech. Students who want to get into IIT starting prepping for the IIT-Joint Entrance Exam from 8th grade. They give this test more importance that they're academics. Around 5000+ people take the test and less than 10% make it into one of the 5 IIT's, making the acceptance rate for each one extremely low. There's absolutely no doubt that IIT students can kill the standardized tests in america.

btw, it was an american news programme that quoted "IIT=MIT + Harvard + Princeton"

the program also quoted "IIT grads leave their American conterparts in the dust"--altho' i dont necessarily agree with this one..

Well I can admit IIT is a great school and that only super smart students get accepted. But what IIT lacks is leadership skills. All they care about is how high of a mark you get on a test. Why go to IIT when you'll probably later be working for some who graduated from Harvard

i agree that IIT falls behind in terms of leadership skills, however, i disagree with the fact that most of them end up working under HYPM students.

Just the other day I was talking to one of my friends who just graduated from GaTech with a degree in electrical/communications engg. He was at an interview for GE. He told me that there were a total of 15 applicants with 3 students from Harvard and the rest from other top unis (below HYPM). And guess what...none of the Harvard students got in.. this proves that HYPM students dont always get the top jobs..btw IIT grads get the highest intial salaries..esp Comp Engg..

ITT is frighteningly hard. It's at least what the 60 minute person said. True, they do lack some leadership skills, but it's the most rigorous school in the world.

Another fact.. IIT used to have a quota for Non Resident Indians i.e. Indians that studied outside India. In order to get admitted NRI students had to have stellar SAT I scores (1500+++) SAT II scores (700++ on Math PHY CHEM and BIO) and academic scores. However, a couple of years ago IIT eliminated this quota as the NRI's who got admitted were not able to compete with the guys who got in via taking the public IIT-Joint Entrance Exam and mind you, these NRI guys were fcking smart!

IIT is not looking for the same skills that HYPM are. It is based solely on one's performance in an insanely difficult two part admission test. (and AA if applicable) There are no application esssays, no evaluation of ECs or non academic skills and no assessment based on high school performance. You just need to graduate successfully from high school in order to matriculate.

And since the test is so tough, you basically need to stop living in the last two years years of high school, because preparing for IIT with an aim to get in is certainly not going to leave you any free time.

true...IIT applicants completely sacrifice they're 11th and 12th grade years prepping for this insanely hard exam..but these guys must be insanely hard working and smart...they're first priority is academics and they're very hard working..

my uncle went to IIT....there are like 7 different campuses or soemthing and it is easier to get into one than the others....

My uncle said he studied in 11th and 12th grade prepping for the exam. He said it was the most he has ever studied....Said that once you get in, the school isn't so bad if you stay on top of your work and study a bunch....

IIT applicants are on a whole different playing field than MIT applicants. If you've seen the problems to an IIT entrance exam, you'll know they're like the hardest questions in the world. It's more prestigious that MIT/Harvard/Princeton and only second to Oxford.

They are all incredibly hard working. Some are smarter than others. Quite a few are socially inept.

IIt students have told me that while getting in is really hard, things get a lot easier once you're actually in. Maybe it's because you're so well prepared after 2-4 years of really rigorous preparatory work.

and once they graduate IIT students still remain hardworking throughout they're entire lives...my dad is an IIT grad..and believe he can be a real pain when it comes to academics..expects me to be like him..

ah yes the travails of having IIT alumni in the family - every second relative in mine is one and theyre all scandalized I din't get in :(

yeah..being an IIT alumni is definately somethin special...and u can tell that IIT grads posses several qualities that a guy from an average college doesnt have...
man..i wish they hadnt taken away the NRI quota..

Working insanely difficult problems will get you a job in a lab, but it won't get you to the board room. For that, you need to be able to write a coherent sentence and carry on an intelligent conversation, something pure engineers aren't noted for.

is it possible t o see that episode again where they mention that? i dont usually watch 60 minutes, and i would like to see it.

Rigorous school work and problems are not the only criteria that a school should be judged on and IIT would have a greater reputation if they provided more than just an intensive and difficult set of classes. They prepare students well for what they are aiming for but to compare "prestige" with HYP I have to say you are all very crazy. Prestige is in part what other people think and while IIT surely has a solid reputation HYP are known for training leaders of the world and the work place. Also, to say well this student got rejected from IIT and into Yale doesn't mean anything. The liberal arts environment is far different and the requirements are different. Under your definition MIT is more prestigous than all the Ivies because they deny Ivy accepted students all the time... in fact they are simply looking for a different set of qualifications. Also, a one sided assesment of a school is rarely fair and while IIT unquestionably has high points there are issues with every school here you may want to post how great it is based on circumstantial evidence or a program designed to hype the school but how many programs have hyped up HYP? Consider before you claim people.
