I don’t have experience with a second child, but I think Choate (any BS) would encourage apps to multiple schools as there is no guarantee of admission anywhere. Multiple apps say you understand this reality. I believe the school does factor in sibling status but it’s the FA need that will be more problematic. Parents with more than one child in BS will need to chime in here.
I am in the camp that no school needs to know anything about your child’s other apps. That is not a question that needs to be answered, so I would not worry about sending any message when there is no message to send.
I’m a day student and I haven’t bought any school supplies at all yet because the portal said that the school store will have them. Looking back, it actually only said ‘special supplies’. Should I go buy binders, folders, etc. before school starts?
@itcannotbetrue I can’t speak specifically for Choate, but for a sibling application in general, I agree with everything @ChoatieMom says.
But I will add that if Choate is your second child’s first choice, you should indicate that, and I’m sure Choate understands that having both kids at one school is easier on you. Use the parent statement to convey these thoughts.
Thanks for your insight @ChoatieMom and @skieurope. Our challege will be the FA aspect, no doubt. And of course convincing DC #2 that there are many great schools that are not “Famous” (or shall we say famously difficult to get into to).
@hopefulprep01 – What is funny is that we were in Office Max at the exact time you posted this question, wondering the same thing and searching the school’s website.
The school bookstore has all relevant supplies but not in quantities sufficient to cover everything every incoming student needs if they all try to purchase everything from the bookstore during registration days. You can bring supplies with you or depend on the local Walmart up the street which seems to be what most students do.
@itcannotbetrue did you find anything on this website? I searched for a while and didn’t find anything. Thanks for the response @ChoatieMom. So it’s okay if I wait until classes actually begin to buy any supplies? And will teachers specify the supplies needed for their class (eg. 2 binders, specific calculator)? Sorry for the follow up questions, I’m just trying to get a sense of things.
Also preliminary fall schedules are online!
@hopefulprep01–No, I could not find anything for this year–however I did find a PDF from last year on “Getting Read for School”. It basically said to wait until you get there!
Yep, you can wait until you get there. I don’t know if HS teachers tell you what you need like elementary school teachers do. I would just assume you might want a notebook for each class and a few pens/pencils. There is a thread somewhere about calculators which you’ll probably want before your first day of math class. I’ll see if I can find it.
Here’s what I found regarding calculators from the 2015-16 course catalog:
Thank you so much @ChoatieMom and @itcannotbetrue! I think I’ll just buy some notebooks and pens like you said for now. Thanks for the calculator info as well; I hadn’t seen that.
Does anyone know anything about the Choate Chorus? Is it audition only or can anyone join? How big of a commitment is it?
Does anybody know if Choate offers a Technical Theater option for one of their electives?
I’m going to Choate tomorrow for a campus tour and an interview. Can anybody help me out on what they might ask me or what is going to happen?
@zomar123-- since I was not the interviewee, I can’t tell you every question that they will ask, but I CAN tell you that there are certain questions that it seems like ALL the schools ask, which is “What did you do this Summer?” and some variation of “Did it include sleep-away camp?” Schools also asked about which sports my son plays, for how long, and how much he liked them. Also there were questions about extra-curriculars. I seem to remember that there was a thread here on CC about frequent prep school interview questions; hopefully you can dig that up (maybe I found it online somewhere else?). I hope that this helps you some. Good luck!
Thanks so much, that helped a lot during the interview
I don’ know how active this thread still is, but does anyone have any advice for music auditions? I’m auditioning for string orchestra on September 8th.Thanks!
