For new day students: do we have to go to breakfast at school tomorrow, or can we get there when registration begins?
@hopefulprep01 : Seems to me that breakfast is optional for Day Students, as they should not show up for registration until after 10:30am or so. This allows the boarders to finish up their registrations so they have time to move into dorms. My DD is not planning to attend breakfast. Get to sleep and have a fun day tomorrow. Best of luck!
First of all, thank you all for your great resources and comments! I got so much help from this thread and other threads.
@mexusa we visited the restaurants that you mentioned and DD was specially happy at the taco place! My DD has to have her regular dosage of tacos and cannot live without them!!! Haha, she is an Asian girl but loves tacos more than any other food! Thank you!
And a special super duper thanks to @ChoatieMom!!! I pretty much read all of your comments! Your valuable comments and insights were very helpful for me to get ready! Thank you so much!!!
Now I am back home… About 3,000 miles away from my DD… after almost a week long trip.
It was hard for me to come back home without her, but I feel confident at this time that I left her in good hands. After I met many people at Choate, I now could understand why my DD wanted to go there for last 2+ years!
She has called and texted many times to let us know how happy she is at Choate.
(Hope she calls everyday )
Once again, thank you all and best wishes for all of you!
Oh! I also I would like to thank all the seniors who were wearing yellow shirts!!!
You guys are awesome! Best wishes for all the seniors for their college application processes!
GO CHOATE!!!
@my2goldenapples --So glad to hear that your daughter is happy. I have the same feeling of confidence regarding the faculty and staff at Choate. We were very impressed by their patience, ability to understand the “Adolescent Mind,” as well as their humor! We feel confident that our son will have a good year in Mem House. I think the shift in paradigm regarding academic expectations will be harder for our son–he is very bright, but never has been very challenged in
(butter fingers! Continued) . . . . in his school environment. Choate will be very good for him.
GO CHOATE!
To all of you just starting your Choate journeys, I envy you and wish you all the best.
I remember freshman move-in day at Mem House like it was yesterday. We also picked up our senior from Mem House on his last day at Choate. There’s no place like Mem.
Hugs to all of you. GO CHOATE!!!
Just picked up DD from the first SAC dance. Crazy outfits, to say the least, not to mention the numerous bruises. Well, we are nearing the end of the first week/weekend and I have never seen my DD happier. I am doing the happy dance myself.
@mexusa --my son has had a great first week boarding. I think he danced 0% of the time last night, and played pool 100% of the time, lol. He is also very happy–which is a HUGE relief since we are 3,000 miles away!
And @Choatiemom-- he is now officially a member of the intramural (and hopefully later regular) Choate crew team and loving it, in spite of the already intense workouts! Mr. Guelakis is also his Physics teacher and is the best!
@itcannotbetrue: DD also a member of the intramural (and hopefully later regular) crew team. They must know each other! She is also loving it, despite the intense workouts. Heard that people are dropping like flies from the team…either not willing to put in the effort or cannot swim well enough.
I am surprised that CRH does not offer swim lessons for their students, especially the international ones who may not have been exposed to swimming much.
Update on swim lessons: Choaties can use Wallingford’s YMCA facilities free. It is about a mile down the main road (Elm). Swim lessons available there.
Crazy small world! He is probably going to be a coxswain (or at least that’s what he’s telling me!). Not sure if he is, if the workouts will continue as intensely for him if he is
P.S. They are in the same English class! LOL
@itcannotbetrue Thank you! It sounds to me that your DS is also enjoying his life at choate!!!
A few days ago, my DD told me her science class (not physics) was challenging. And it was the first time that I’d ever heard her saying so! And I was very glad to hear that!!
Go choate!
Wow! Went into Wallingford tonight and you could not swing a dead cat without hitting a Choatie! They were all over the restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops, and Walmart. Beautiful fall night for wandering around.
Too funny!
You guys are making me nostalgic for PW and fall in New England. I will treasure those memories forever. @mexusa, you live close to campus so you get to enjoy the “scene” whenever you want to. I envy you that. Enjoy your weather.
So mid-term grades are coming out on Saturday…DD is working hard and, to be expected, finding Choate grading is much tougher than her middle school. We are not expecting the traditional 98/99!
Here you go, mex:

@Choatiemom: Thanks for the post. I am logging in now to read those teachers’ comments…
Wait, they’re up?!?
Talked with my DCS (lol, Darling Choate Son) and good news: All A’s and B’s!
Frankly we were preparing for worse (admittedly, I am not a glass half full kind of mom!)
I will look for teacher comments tomorrow–or didn’t they say the 10th for the parent portal? Please advise, @mexusa.
No, not up yet! The 10th…DD tells me she has decent grades as well. (A’s and B’s) Cannot wait to see the teachers’ comments.
