From CK’s mouth, “No one gives a what kind of backpack you have.”
Well, there you have it.

(^^^Sorry – post-graduation response.)
LOL
Okay thanks for the response @itcannotbetrue, I’m not from the U.S. I currently go to school in Europe so I thought it might be different but I guess Herschels are popular worldwide!
and @ChoatieMom haha I don’t blame him.
Hello,
I am a fellow 7th grader, but soon bound to be an 8th grader.
Since summer is now near, I thought it would be time to start preparing for boarding schools.
This year, I am fortunate to be attending the Choate Summer Program for 2 weeks.
Because of this, I have gotten more and more interested to this school. But the the problem is that people’s opinion about this school differ in many ways; it is both negative and positive. Some say that since there are quiet a few day students, they have an advantage with studying (because of personal tutors and such) while on the other hand, boarding students are stuck there, struggling with the academics.
Please help! Is this true?
Thank you.
P.S. For those who attended the Choate Summer Program, do you know exactly what you do on weekends? It doesn’t say!
@gkim931: Day students at ALL boarding schools have the advantage of being able to go home at night, enjoy family, and study beyond study hours and lights/internet out (where those policies exist, and they do exist at Choate). If you need or want tutoring, you can get it at/through Choate, no advantage to being a day student on that issue
As for weekends, summer school or regular school year, students wander into the town of Wallingford which surrounds the campus. Choate considers the town part of the campus; there are no walls/gates/boundaries. You can also walk to the train station for trips to NYC, Boston, New Haven, etc., although I don’t know what the rules are for off-campus trips during the summer school program. You can always call and ask, though.
Hi,
I’m an incoming 3rd form girl and I was just wondering what places would be the best to shop for clothes?
@Penguins75: Wherever you currently shop is fine.
I don’t understand the concern about clothing. The rule is: You must wear some, and they should be clean.
My son follows above rule…my daughter, well, that is a different story. Mars and Venus.
Just some information from the most recent Choate parent newsletter to help you plan if you don’t already have this:
And here’s the revised travel calendar:
Thanks for posting! What do the new students do on that Tuesday before school starts? Do they have activities planned for them?
Yes, they will have a full schedule during opening days.
Does anyone know when we get our class schedule? It just says coming soon on the website.
Then they will be coming soon.
Hi,
I have never done step team but when I saw it at orientation I thought it was really cool. Since I have no prior experience with this form of dance, I was wondering if you have to try out for it.? Also if you can tell me if it interferes with sports teams that would be good. Thanks
Where does it say the schedule is coming soon, @hopefulprep01? This is what I get on Parents’ Portal:
Schedules are currently unavailable for the term FALL/2016
please check back after August 31 2015. Hope to see it before then!
few more questions
Do most of the kids use apple computers? Is it better to have an apple computer to sync with iphone, ipad, etc.?
Is there a swim test? Is the ice rink open year round or just during the winter term?
Here is the info on computer use: https://parents.choate.edu/go/computers/Pages/Computers.aspx
We do not plan on getting an Apple. DD does not have iphone and will not get one. Ipad will be the one normally used by Choate (see description).
I do not know about a swim test, but you should know all four strokes and have the stamina to finish several laps (pool is short course meters). Most of the new 3rd formers who are swimming come from year round clubs, where they swim a few miles a practice.
You should email Coach Sara Massa and ask her for more info. I heard that they only do cuts if there are too many swimmers per lane and it becomes a safety issue. They did lose a lot of seniors, but there are some strong incoming 3rd formers. Pool is very nice and air quality is better than most pools. Coach Sara is a well respected coach in the state and is very welcoming.
No idea on ice rink, but it is considered one of the best in the state. You could email one of the Athletic Administrators and inquire.
My DD will be swimming, so surely you will meet.
There is a rumor that Choate will be building a new hockey rink. I don’t know the hours for the ice rink, but you can always call…
