Everything that the avg. person wants to know about college admissions!

Hey. I am going ot be applying ot college in the fall of 2007 and thus have a few questions:

1.) What is Early Decision exactly and does it really help? Similarly what is Early action?

2.) When do we know if we are in to our specified college or does that notification date differ from college to college?

3.) Is there any way to apply over the summer and know by september?

4.) What is an AP Scholar?

5.) Are we allowed to attach extra information to college applications? Such as an essay or personal statement? Or does it differe from college application to application?

6.) When will our common application be out (the one for the students who will apply to college in the fall of 2007) and where can I find one?

7.) When I apply to a college, do I have to specify what I am going to study and thus go to that specific branch of the college? For example, if I get into NYU and I want to study buisness; do I go to NYU's school of business (stern i think it is called) or do all of NYU's freshmen go to like an unspecified undergraduate college and then go to the NYU buisness school branch for thier graduate school?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

If you apply Early Decision and you are accepted...you have to go to that college no matter what. And it helps because it shows that you really ant to go to that school more than anything. Early Action is just like applying except you have to turn in your application earlier and you get an answer earlier as well.

It differs from college to college but you will usually find out in late march or early April.

Not that i know of.

It is granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

i think it differs...not totally sure

It will be out sometime in July and you can find it on thier site

Thanks man for the quick responses.

1) Early Decision means you apply to that school--you can apply to only ONE school ED--and if accepted, you are legally bound to attend unless you can come up with a great excuse, and some schools won't take "well I cant afford it" as an excuse, because that should be taken into consideration when you apply. Once accepted to your ED school, you must withdraw apps from all other schools you applied to. Early Action is similar, except you can apply to multiple schools EA, except for a few schools which have Single Choice Early Action. EA is not legally binding, so you're not required to attend if accepted.

2) Varies from college to college.

3) If the school has rolling admissions. Rolling admissions is essentialy "first come, first served" admissions.

4, 5, 6) I dont really know.

In answer to the OP's #7, it varies from college to college. Some places let you apply directly to the school you want to major in, while others require that you apply to the general college and then declare a major later on.

Yes, rolling decision allows you to apply in the summer and be accepted sometime in the fall. I know of a friend that applied to college about a week ago and will know the decision by the time his senior year starts.

Several state schools (Rutgers, Penn State, that I know of) offer rolling admissions and you can find out before you send your regular decisions out.

Hi Lurker,

Do u know any schools that offer rolling decisions for international students???

Thanks a lot

It is rolling decision whether you are in-state or not.
