Everything You Want to Know About Hill (Pictures Included)

are the 540’s in a good location?

i think that would be 5th floor, east side, facing 33rd street

nice, thanks tenebrousfire

what size curtains would you buy for the hill closets?

Don’t buy curtains for Hill Closets. Many closets actually come with doors or curtains already. But really it’s completely unnecessary.

I only read the first page of this thread so if someone already said this, sorry for repeating.

Hill is very social… my suitemates and I actually went out every Thursday, Friday and Saturday the entire first semester. We found different groups of friends second semester, but we still hang out every now and then!
As far as drinking in Hill, really it’d probably be best to just not do that. Sure, pregaming in a room is one thing, but all out parties and the like are just asking to get written up. Getting written up once is no big deal… but I’ll have you know… don’t get written up twice in one weekend. It’s not that your parents get called or anything… it just makes for a super awkward conversation with Stephanie Weaver (House Dean) !!

Other things to know… Bed risers are a HUGE help for adding space. You can get them at Bed, Bath and Beyond for ten bucks, and they will add an extra 6-8" of space underneath your bed. I used that space for all kinds of stuff.

If you ever have a problem with the building, don’t bother with the Facilities website. Call up their “emergency” number and act like the problem is the worst thing in the world. They’ll be out within two days if that’s the case. I tried the Facilities website for several naggy problems… it took nine months to fix them (I’m not even joking. I submitted the request in November and they got fixed in August).

For food options aside from the dining hall, there are food carts on 33rd Street that you should definitely check out. Learn to love 898-RIDE to get to and from the grocery store (it’s only six blocks away, but it’s just a pain if you have a bunch of stuff!)

That does it for now…

hmm my website-submitted facility requests were usually pretty quick to be addressed…

tenebrousfire do you know the location of 518?

i want to guess north side, but i could be off

What is the temperature like in the winter? I am trying to decide what type of comforter to get. I probably won’t even need one in the fall/spring but I want to know if I should get a heavy duty or just normal one that would be helpful in the winter. I got the normal one but am now considering the heavy duty one because then it’s easier to get warm if I am cold whereas I’m kinda screwed the other way around. Thanks.

Bump.
And just for clarification…when I said temperature, I meant indoors

Since there’s no heating system inside rooms in Hill, I would get a heavy comforter just to be safe.

Actually there must be some kind of heating system, so just bring whatever comforter you like from home…

its warm i wore shorts inside in the winter all the time

Susie, there is absolutely a heating system in Hill… that’s a requirement for places to be up to living code. My room was actually extremely hot in the wintertime… the heater doesn’t have a thermostat and you have no control over it so it runs when it wants to. I actually had to open my window several times in the winter. Also some windows don’t engage the lock properly, and it that occurs, then the room will get pretty chilly. Specifically, room 225 (my old room) had that problem. So be on the lookout for that.

Also not having air conditioning is not a big deal at ALL. You learn how to properly ventilate your room (if you have the slit windows, prop your door open and have an oscillating fan blowing air out during the day and in at night).

can you loft the beds in hill? where do you get the bed lofters?

All those that had the bad dust problems, which floor were you on? if your room number starts with 2, are you on the 2nd floor, i.e you come in off the street on 1st floor, and then rooms starting with 2 are on the 2nd floor?

Is the dust problem pretty bad in all of Hill or just the floor coming off the street?

Thanks!

You come off the street at what is more like 1.75… you go up five steps to get to floor 2. From what I know it’s bad all over because the heating unit has basically never been cleaned out, therefore dust blows into rooms whenever the heat’s on.

thanks Chrisw, what a shame that they have not bothered to keep up with such a basic maintenance that would significantly improve the living conditions.

ha, that was the least of our worries two years ago. Our showers often decided not to work, and one of our common rooms had a light with a mind of its own; it would turn on sometimes, but sometimes it would just more or less say that it didn’t want us there haha

It’s gotten better, but they still haven’t figured out that when they paint they need to take off old coats and sand stuff down. meh. It’s a great social environment and the rooms are big enough to not feel claustrophobic but small enough to force you outside

I have a question. How do you hang stuff up in the rooms? How do we put hooks up for cork boards and I saw in the pictures that someone had a curtain over the window. How do you get the bar up? I was under the impression we couldn’t make holes in the wall but then my friend told me as long as you fill the hole with putty it is ok.
