I am going away starting mid June to late July for vacation…
I am kinda worried about the NSO dates though, because of the chance I won’t be able to listen to a certain class.
Does anybody know if there are any NSO dates prior to mid June?
I’d really appreciate it…
Take your ALEKS placement exam as soon as possible and keep an eye on emails as per their website https://orientation.psu.edu/up to jump on registration as soon as it becomes available. I believe there are some in early June. The Schreyer one is late May but not sure if that’s open to everyone.
Do parents have to come to the NSO?
The NSO website https://orientation.psu.edu/up says “A companion Parent & Family program is available for any parents or family members that will be traveling to University Park with you for NSO,” which seems to imply that it’s optional. I think certainly there are people for whom traveling cross-country or internationally would be a problem.
I will defer to anyone who has a more specific answer though. My parent was able to come with me when I went so I didn’t think much about it.
Okay may sound stupid to some people, but here is what I am worried about.
I am not Caucasian, and although I am not so worried about not getting along with any peers of any race, I am kind of worried about my parents not getting along with any other parents. They have trouble speaking English fluently and just not yet adjusted to this new culture.
How was the racial diversity when you attended the NSO?
Seriously, bodangles, you are helping me alot. Really appreciate it.
Penn State UP (I’ve been assuming that’s your campus) as a whole is like 60% white so unfortunately diversity isn’t the best. But if they understand enough English to find the information sessions useful (http://orientation.psu.edu/up/family for a list) then I’m sure they’d be fine? Generally, despite being majority white, Penn State accepts quite a few international students so I am sure they are used to stuff like that.
Perhaps emailing or calling the office in charge of NSO would help put your mind at ease? http://orientation.psu.edu/contact You could have a concrete answer by Monday, if they’re prompt about getting back to you.
NSO is staffed by plenty of people willing and able to help your parents out. The parents aren’t going to be playing party games or exchanging addresses, they’re going to be listening to lectures about financial aid and student life. And while it is true the campus population is mostly Caucasian/European, it is much, much more diverse than your average Pennsylvania town. Hence, people are accustomed to people who speak another language or have questions. I would cross this worry off your list.
