Excellent Teachers?

We all know the education at Rice U is top notch. It's routinely top-ranked. But I've also heard, sporadically, even while visiting campus, that some of Rice's professors, particularly in the technical fields, are not necessarily excellent teachers. Specifically, the students who complained said that some of the professors who are outstanding in their fields have problems getting their points across either because of language barriers and heavy accents, or because they're so accomplished and technical that they have trouble describing their concepts in basic-enough ways. These students complained that their technical classes were therefore less enjoyable and often more difficult.

Any comments? Specifically, how are the professors at the School of Engineering?

I think this will be the case at any elite university, whether it is Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Duke, Hopkins, Northwestern, WashU, Brown, Cornell, CMU, or Rice.

DS hasn’t complained about accents. I know that he prefers some profs to others, and some are better teachers than others. Just anecdotally, his mentor in engineering has no accent, and is a great prof. I’ve met him, and he is really a nice guy, too!
