I have a really high gpa 4.55/4.6 and with this semester's grades it will be even higher bc I have straight A's in 6 ap classes. (I think like a 4.59/4.6)

I got a 1960 sat1
chem:770 bio: 720 Math2: 660
National Achievement for PSAT

Most people say high gpa w/ low sats shows grade inflation in an easy school, but my hs is ranked in the top 100 public schools in the nation. There aren't many people who have taken all honors/ap throughout hs, and even less who do so w/ all a's (im ranked in the top 1%, and it should jump after this semester).

Do you think my grades will make up for my low scores at the Ivies and schools like duke, jhu, stanford?

I think with the huge increase in applicants, these schools might see my mere 1960 and laugh. With my scores I dont think I have any chance!!

^ I disagree with Smallz3141, good/great essays can't make up for weak sat scores..

If you think about it, colleges are justified in placing a lot of emphasis on sat scores...How are they to know how hard your school is? They use the sat, because the sat is the same for everyone..I think that low scores and high gpa will indicate some grade inflation.

I did however, have around the same sat score as you my first time(1930), the second time my score went to a 2170...so if you are a junior I would suggest prepping for it more and scoring well again. The level of prepartion you recieved from your years of taking honors and a.p. classes, and doing well in them is the best prepartion for the sats.

Good Luck...I am not saying you don't have a chance, but I am simply saying it will be an uphill battle with your current stats...I defintly suggest taking the sats over again.

I also think that colleges won't look and say "Oh, your school is ranked in the top 100 by newsweek". You have to realize that those rankings don't inculde private schools and magnet schools, so it takes the really compietive schools out. In order to measure the difficulty of your high schools, the colleges will use the Counselor's Form, which your counselor has to fill out, to determine how difficult your school is. Hopefully your counselor will do a good job explaining how rigorous your high school really is.

Do you have any hooks? Urm? Legacy? National/Internation Ecs? - These may greatly increase your chances of getting in, even with your current scores...

Are you African-American or Hispanic? The National Achievement PSAT reference implies this. If so, your SAT's are very credible for many top 20 schools.

A 1960/2400 is only low here in the land of the uber-nerds. Anywhere else you are solid.

I don't think the score will necessarily keep you out as a URM, especially if you are coming from an under performing school, are low income or first generation. I work with kids who fit that description who have made it into ivies.

However, the competition becomes more stiff every year and today the ivies reject 75% plus of URM applicants. If you can raise the score a bit, it will really help.
