Exeter Chances

This is your chance to be incredibly honest on a 'Chance Me' thread. Please, please be honest. Also, identify yourself as a parent or student. Here we go:

I am a sophomore applying for my junior (lower) year.

GPA for overall: 4.0/5.0 (not including first semester of 2012-2013 school year)
GPA for ninth grade: 4.2/5.0

SAT: slightly north of 2,000.

ECs:

Literary magazine
Honor society
Foreign relations advocacy group
Former political internship
Speech & debate

^ leadership positions in 3/5 of the above

PLUS: I volunteer with a public organization throughout the summers and during the academic years.

EMPLOYMENT: Since 2011. It is a job, but I turned down offers to be payed.

Other things: one notable award, another notable accomplishment, both from places of which you have heard.

Essays: exceptionally strong.
Interview: interviewer liked me, said he hopes I get in.

English and math recs: My English teacher worked in my favor. I feel less confident about the math recommendation. Teacher may have not been so kind.

Counselor recommendation: Really very strong.

EC recommendation: Equally strong as counselor's

Hi, I am a parent. I will be honest.

I believe the reason for ‘chance me’ thread is get some advice to help improve your chance for acceptance BEFORE you submit the application. After you submit, there is actually nothing you can do. In addition, no one can give you a precise answer. What are you going to do when everyone here says you will be accepted? Will it make you feel better?

That is why most parents with experience would not look at ‘chance me’ thread, especially at this point of time, because they know it is not going to help a lot

Relax and wait for M10. Just a few more days to go. DO something else than spending your precious time on CC. I wish you all the best.

I asked so I could either calm or further excite my nerves.

Bump, bump, bump

I can’t wait two more days. Give me your opinions

Hi ameripen,

I applied to exeter as an 8th grader (applied to be a freshman). I got in, but I decided to go to Choate instead. I’m a sophomore.

Honestly, you do have a good chance. However, I noticed one thing you didn’t mention was sports…? Not that that’s a deciding factor or anything, it’s just a pretty big extra curricular for many applicants. Your GPA and test scores are great, however that won’t immediately get you in. Prep schools don’t just look at grades and numbers, because they reject people with perfect scores all the time, and admit people with less than perfect scores (like me). I hope you made it clear that you want to continue those ECs that you have listed above throughout your high school career, because prep schools like that too. Your “awards” seem a little vague… But if you have good recommendations then that’s a plus too.

Short answer: you have a good chance. But you can never be 100% sure. Good luck to you.

I appreciate your feedback. Many thanks.

The award was originally vague because I didn’t want to identify myself in case admissions officers were lurking on CC, but since they have already decided I will say that they come from Ivy League institutions.

And tomorrow I will hear from them
