I'm a speech and debate co-head here at Exeter, and my colleagues and I would like to have some idea of how many debaters out there are considering Exeter
as their school. To answer some questions you may have about our organization, we compete in the DANEIS league (we can't do NFL tournaments because
we have classes on Saturdays) and we mostly do policy and parli debates, with one or two public speaking tournaments a year. Feel free to ask any other questions
you may have.

Hi,
My son is applying to 9th grade. He is currently an 8th grader in a magnet middle school housed in a high school. He was recruited by the upperclassmen to be the student trainer for the champion senior Mock Trial team and a member of the junior Mock Trial Team. He is enjoying his time on Mock Trial (won the team's only perfect scores in his first competition last weekend), but is considering switching to Debate for high school.

I'm not really sure if I want to pursue economics or law/debate/that kinda stuff, but if I decided to go with the latter then I probably would join the team at exeter (if i hopefully get accepted). Btw I'm in 8th grade now.

Same as DEtrombone- I've wanted to do debate since forever, but my old middle school had no team, and I couldn't try out for my current school's team because of the days were on the same as three other clubs I'm in. I've wanted to become a criminal justice attorney since second grade, so if I do get accepted into Exeter I'm trying out for the team.

I am applying, and hopefully attending (one of my three first choices, the others being Andover and Milton), to Exeter.

I am on the mock trial team at school and I do casual debate society with my friends. I understand how structured debate works but my school does not offer. We are on the forefront of organizing a local debate league.

Thanks for all the quick responses, we're all keeping a close eye on this thread. It's perfectly fine if you don't have much experience. In fact, most, if not all, of
our top debaters started forensics their freshman year. As long as you're willing to give it a shot, I'm sure we can make you the best debater you can be.

To answer some questions that you had, yes there is a model UN club on campus that's quite active. It goes to several conferences a year and I believe it's one
of the bigger clubs. Mock trial also exists, but on a smaller scale. There is no mock trial league for prep schools (to my knowledge) but co-heads of the mock trial
club are working closely with the Andover club heads to try and get one going. The mock trial club attends the Harvard Seminar every year and are in the process
of trying to get permission to go to the Yale one also.

Again, thanks for all the responses we've had. It's heartening to see that so many of you are interested in debate and public speaking. If there are any more questions,
not just about debate but also about Exeter in general, I'd be happy to answer.

Hello exeter forensic,
i have applied to exeter for the 9th grade and i have been on the debate team at my middle school and we participate in a mini-model congress.
I have would definitely like to pursue this at exeter.
I am good public speaker and im good at pin pointing people with questions.
It would be quite an honor to participate in your highly competitive debate team.

Thanks for all the responses, but there's one thing we've been curious about. Those who have done debate before, what kind of debate did you do?
Policy, parli, pofo, Lincoln-Douglas? And in what league? Again, if you don't know what those are that's fine. I didn't know that debate was a
competitive activity until I arrived here. We'll definitely bring you up to speed.

im not 100% sure but i think it is parli
because i am doing a bill which is divided by ( the house and senate)
the league im not sure but we just compete with other towns in my state in trenton

I attend a top public high school iy ny, nd do extemp. we are in various leagues esp. in NE area. I've just decided to give model UN a shot, but probably will change back

There was a debate club at my old school, but not at my current one.
I love to debate, have done many camps and things that deal with debating, currently taking a Government/Economics/Law class, still haven't reached the law stage though.
In short, i'd love to join.

Now...go forth and improve my chances within the next 19 hours.

Hi! i notice the post are really long time ago, but I do debate. cross-ex debate.
I have been to two tournaments and I am going to 4 more this year. I have gotten 5th place in my first tournament (Alpharetta Treasure Hunt) and got 3rd in my second one (Northview Titan Tournament). I am going to Emory Debate Camp this summer. I have qualified for 2 national tournaments (Vestavia Hills and Woodward Tourney) later in Spring this year also. I almost went to the Ohio Valley National Invitational, but it was to expensive. Finally, my record as a debater in 8 wins 1 lose.

My brother currently attends Groton School (which I am not applying too.) He attended the same middle school that I am currently, but sadly, our school does not have a debate team. When going to Groton though, his freshman year he joined the debate team and now, in his junior year, wins many debates for the team and loves it. After watching him I am very interested in joining a debate team in high school. I only have one question, does Exeter’s debate team have an prerequisites for people who want to join their team?

Exeter is one of my top choices and I am applying their. Last year I joined my high schools debate team although I was in 8th grade. I have to say it has been truly interesting and quite an experience. I did policy mostly and my school competed in NFL. We did pretty well and it even interested me enough to consider joining the Model UN. I would love to be able to be a part of your amazing school and debate team. If you have any questions for me I can give you more of my credentials and thanks for considering me :)

I know the OP probably isn’t still here, but if anyone else would eb able to tell me about the sort fo format debates done at prep school, I’d be really grateful. Over here we have teams of two competing in 4 a side prop/opp motion things, but reading the above posts I gather that’s not like whats normally done?
