Hello! I am an entering freshman majoring in both Plan II and Neuroscience. I’d like to live nearby to people in my Plan II major because I feel like that would help me meet a lot of new friends (and study partners). However, I heard that the rooms are quite small in the Honors Quad, and I’ve yet to hear about it in detail from anyone who has lived there. Also, I heard that Kinsolving has many convenient amenities, though the rooms are also small, and that Duren is newer with larger rooms and pretty nice. Does anyone have any experience with these dorms? Feel free to sway me!
My current UT student lives in Kins They have the Kins Market, a coffee place and one of the dining halls in their building. There is a small work out area, and there is a tutoring area. Both Women in Natural Sciences and Women in Engineering have communities living there. One side is community bath, and one side is shared private bath. The reality of college life is that dorm rooms are small, and there’s no getting around that one. Just choose the one that looks most tolerable to you. Good luck
My son lived in Duren first year and had a good experience. New building so nice common areas, close to food either at dining hall or the fast food places. Close to science and communication and Speedway, far from music building and stadium. The room was a double, big enough once they lifted the beds.
If you are restricting yourself in the Northwestern side of the campus and only want dorms in that region, then Duren is definitely the nicest one with significantly newer appliances and more luxury. Kinsolving is pretty old and is a girls-only dorm, also it doesn’t have regular beds. You’ll instead get a sofa-bed that can be retracted when not used (I stayed there for 3 days during orientation and it’s quite uncomfortable, but it might because I’m a guy and the bed is too short for me). However there’s a market and a buffet located on Kinsolving’s first floor, which is very convenient if you live there. Some of my friends live in Duren and go to Kinsolvng for dinner everyday, since the walking distance from there to Kingsolving is just 1-2 minutes, so my suggestion will be Duren if you can afford the price there.
