Was anyone invited to this event? Do you plan on going?
I went to Experience Fordham in 2012 and I really enjoyed it, so I recommend all invitees to go.
I got my invitation to the event on Friday and signed up the same day. Fordham is one of my top three choices so I’m hoping that I’m chosen to go. I haven’t toured their campus so I’m really looking forward to exploring Rose Hill and sitting in on a class.
I didn’t sign up until Saturday. I’m really hoping it didn’t fill up!
I think this is a special program, by invitation. Its a great way to learn about Fordham from the inside. However, there is an open Admitted Students weekend/day in April, usually the second week in April…where they pull out the stops for everyone, and you tour the campus, meet students, administrators, faculty, deans and Fr. McShane. There is even a mass in the University Church. Its an invaluable way to learn about Fordham and also to meet prospective students, all of whom have been admitted. Some will go elsewhere for different reasons, but its a great way to “close the sale” before the May 1 drop dead date.
I would never attend a college sight unseen. So regardless how or when you visit campus, I strongly encourage everyone to see the school (FCLC or FCRH or Gabelli Business), then make your final decision on where you will attend college. Most of the time, its a gut feel. That is how it was for us. Didnt make it easy, btw. We got down to the final three schools and the last hour of the last day…though we (she) had pretty much made up her mind it was Fordham. There were lots of friends pulling her another direction. Lots of factors involved, including money, culture, counter cultural/ counter conventional factors, etc.
I wish everyone the very best. Fordham is very special.
Wow everyone seems to have gotten these invitations much earlier than me! Congratulations to you all! Considering i just got the invitation today, which is strangely after the deadline, do you think it is already full?
Also, does anyone know if being invited to this program has any correlation with merit, or amount of merit someone would get?
Nope. I would accept the offer if you want it.
As for merit aid, it obviously comes with scholarship money…not sure how much and it might depend on several factors.
Call tomorrow and find out the amount of merit aid and then let them know if you are going to accept.
Congratulations to you. Its a wonderful program but its also a lot of hard work. Its not for the undisciplined.
I just got confirmed for the program today!!
I also got accepted and confirmed for the program today! I’m sooo excited to go and I got accepted and want to go to the Lincoln Center campus so I hope that’s the one I get assigned to.
@matachines you said you participated in the event? Could you give us a little bit more details on how the trip went? Also, one of my biggest questions is if we’ll have down time to go wherever we want in the city, especially if im at the Lincoln Center campus right in Manhattan. I’m from Florida and wanted to visit Central Park or Times Square during the trip and I was wondering if I had time to do “exploring”. Are there curfews? Any possible times when we’re not doing an activity and are able to go where we like?
I have no idea what the itinerary for the program will be but if you are at the Lincoln Center campus you will be so close to Central Park, Times Square, Empire State Building etc. that you will be able to see them all.
@sovereigndebt is it your daughter that attended the program? did she enjoy it, or receive any merit from Fordham?
@matachines what did you think of the program?
ibther:
No. A lot has changed the last 7 years. At that time it was a very very small program…perhaps a couple of people. (From what I know.) They did an orientation for EA accepted students earlier than the April orientation for RD kids. Though you always had until May 1 to inform them of your decision. They always had the Urban Plunge program going on…and that was a week prior to moving in, in late August. Most kids just came to Orientation and talked to faculty, administrators, toured campus and met other kids thinking about accepting an offer. That is what we did.
She had an early “likely letter” that came out about a week or so before the actual offer came in. She was below the then threshold (anecdotal) of 1400 SAT and got no merit aid. But she did get a generous university grant…same money so to speak, without the fanfare and prestige. Though we had to file FAFSA every year and apply for aid.
We are not New Yorkers. There was culture shock first semester and the usual dorm drama, outlined in other threads here on CC. She did extremely well at Fordham during her four years and was accepted into numerous graduate programs including Columbia. But went to Boston instead for the money.
I strongly recommend visiting campus…and if they are paying for it, then do it. If you wish to come to Orientation in April that is also a good idea…to see the kids who will be in your class. We are Rose Hill people, btw.
Deciding between offers is never easy. We had several. Lots of issues, factors and emotional ties to friends going elsewhere. Not easy. But she made her choice, and moved forward. We are glad she went to Fordham though its very expensive.
She was in an honors program offered in her major after Freshman year. It was spectacular. A very good decision. Fabulous faculty. Some of whom are still her friends. She is very close to numerous former roomies and classmates (all of whom are coming to her upcoming wedding! )
No school is perfect and no school is perfect for everyone. Always issues here and there and all schools have glossy folders and max out the PR work. But growth is a good thing and so is change. Fordham is an academic school. Its not Ohio State where sports events are a huge part of the life there. We have sports, they are fun and a healthy distraction from studying. But at the end of the day, its a strong academic school which will challenge you to the max.
Many of her friends had very high SAT’s btw, some were 1600. If you come,. be prepared to work hard. The rewards are awesome. Internships in the city. Mentors to recommend jobs and graduate programs. Lifelong friends. And the overall experience of being in New York. Good luck.
Wow @sovereigndebt thank you so much for your post! Very helpful and insightful–I really appreciate it.
I’m a bit late but I went to the program at Lincoln Center (both campuses have similar events though) and it was very fun. We stayed in the dorms, got good food, went to a Broadway show and dinner at Jazz at LC. I don’t remember having much free time though… I think you are doing stuff for most of the program.
accepted and sent in all my registration forms today! super excited; maybe I’ll meet some of you there. accepted into the gabelli school of business at rose hill!
I’ll be there for Gabelli at rose hill also!
Wait is experience fordham for accepted applicants… cause I was deferred and maybe if?! but pray for me please people!!! (bio at rose hil)
