I just visited Fordham University and attended the Fordham Upclose program for early accepted students. I wanted to get any feedback from other people, students or parents, that also attended.

My D was accepted early response but will not be able to visit until the April Spring Preview for admitted students. I would love to hear your thoughts on the college and the program you attended. Thanks.

was that for a specific school? i'm signed up for "class visit day" at CBA tuesday
is that the same thing

So, what was your impression? We attended today's Class Visit day & were a bit disappointed that d did not actually visit a class. The program was set up so the students met with a teacher who taught a class & the teacher discussed the course. We were under the impression that she would visit an actual class that was taking place with current freshmen so she could get a feel for the professor/class. Also, she never met any current students, which was advertised too. I'm sorry I missed a day of work for this as the only thing new I learned was that the students' laundry machines are free.

My daughter was disappointed with Class Visit day, too. She expected to visit an actual class and interact with current students. She went in with Fordham as her first choice, but left with some doubts as to whether or not it was the place for her. I think her impression would have been vastly different if she was able to speak with current Fordham students.

As Fordham alums, my husband and I were disappointed, too. We don't think today's presentation gave an accurate picture of Fordham. I am encouraging her to contact a friend who is a current student so she can get a better feel for the school.

I have to say that I'm suprised to hear negative comments about yesterday's class visit day. We drove up from PA with my D and thought the pverall presentation was great.

We did the 10am tour (our gourp was about 10 people and was given by a current JR) and then did the formal presentation. The Fordham representives were oustnading. They were infomrative and willing to answer every question asked. Afterwards, we walked around the school on our own and talked to 6-8 radom students about Fordham. We spent time in the library, the main cafeteria, the fitness area, the health center and generally walked the entire campus. Although cold, it was probaly the best accepted student visit/program we have attended.

Maybe we just had differnet expectations. Regadless, yesterday raised Fordham's postion on my D's top 3 list.

Perhaps you're right. It may have been a matter of expectations.

Milton, was this your first visit to Fordham? We had attended a spring visit day in April '07 that was pretty much the tour you attended yesterday. We also felt the President's Open House in October was very informative. I guess we felt that we didn't learn anything new at yesterday's class visit day. The class visit was a "mock" class, and the schedule didn't allow for the students (current high school seniors) to even get to know one another.

As Fordham alums, we know how great the education at Fordham is. On this board, current students complain about the core, but it really does give you a well-rounded education. My daughter knows of our experience at Fordham, but our experience is 21 years old, and she really would have liked to hear from current students. Ultimately, I do think she will attend Fordham.

You're correct we did the "standard" tour in the morning but, it's good becasue they are student lead.

My D is trying to decide between Villanova, Loyola and Fordahm. Since she hasn't decided on her major the core concept gives her flexibility. Loyola has the same type of core program; at Villanova she had to apply to a specific school. Anyway. up unitl yesterday Fordham was #3 on her list..after yesterday it's #1.

Of course, what do I know...I just drive the car, utter words of encouragment and secretly wish that I could go back in time relive my college experience.

Hi Milton, I hope you don't interpret my comments as a negative impression of Fordham overall. As you can probably tell from my screen name, I am a huge fan of Fordham and have been encouraging my d to attend and carry on our family legacy at the school.

We did, however, attend yesterday's Class Visit day with a completely different perspective. We live very close to the University and are on campus often for a variety of events. Our family probably has a 50+ year relationship with the university going back to the grandparents, so Fordham is a home away from home for us. I actually remember my first time on campus during an Irish festival many, many decades ago when I was 3 years old.

During class visit day, we did, however, expect dd to sit in on an actual class where we assumed she would interact with current students. We were told this would occur in a phone conversation with the university staff. That was our primary reason for attending, so we were disappointed when this did not happen. Also, not learning anything new has to do with the fact that my dh and I are both alumni and probably could have sat on the panel and answered some of those questions ourselves! It had nothing to do with Fordham's panel not doing their job. We just already knew everything they said (except for the free laundry machines - LOL!)

My d was also accepted to Villanova and Loyola with a very nice scholarship. We're hoping Fordham will be as generous when the final package arrives. Good luck to your d. I'm sure she will love Fordham & NYC!

Fordhamalum...no need to explain. Attending an actual class would have made the trip that much better. With the huge turn out they had; maybe it wasn't practicle?

D is our oldest so we're doing going through the modern college process for the first time; it is much different then it was when my wife and I went!

We are off to Villanova again on Saturday for a walk-around campus and Loyola in 2 weeks for the student lead tour and D is going to attend some classses. The Loyolla accepted student open house isn't unitl mid April and she wants to make her decsion in the next few weeks.

Of the 3 schools, D was leaning towards Loyolla but, she loved Fordham. D has some issues with Villanova..it doesn't have that Fordham/Loyolla campus, D did not get any scholraship money AND we live close by. We'll see how things go over the next few weeks. In the end, I think she'll choose based on whch school "feels right"...

We attended the Accepted Student Day which was held last Friday. Our S. is also looking at Loyola among others. This was our first visit to Fordham, as we do not live within driving distance, thought we'd see if he got in first. After the visit Fordham has moved to #1 on his list. We were very favorably impressed. - tho we didn't know about the free laundry, that's even better!
S. also had a mock, rather than actual, class but was favorably impressed. By far this was the best of the approx. 10 campus tours we have been on, our guide was excellent and we liked what we saw.
I'll admit my DH is concerned about the neighborhood, but is suitably impressed with the safety measures and the safety department overall. Not to mention the $$. There is about a 90% chance my son will be on campus at Fordham in the Fall.

My D missed the accepted students day, and while I was upset we couldn't attend, after reading these posts, I feel a little better. It seems like the tour was about the same as what we have been on, and since Fordham is her #1 choice, she doesn't really need any more selling.

I want her to spend some time there (class, hoop game, overnight?) to see how she likes the overall experience. We are still trying to schedule that.

Milton - My D is also considering Loyola Md (as well as Loyola-Chicago), but not Villanova. As a St. Joe grad, I can't picture myself writing a check to 'nova! (Actually, I would have been OK if my D had any interest, but she didn't).

dcathoops...my D applied to and was accepted to St. Joe's and got a very nice scholarship but, (nothing persoanl) the campus/envirorment just doesn't compare to the other three. D is favoring Fordham with Loyolla a close second.
