Experience with special interest floors?

Greetings, everyone~

I am applying for transfer to USC and am interested in several of the special interest floors. Cinema, Women's Wellness, Rainbow, and possibly Go! Does anyone have any experience living on these floors? Pros? Cons?

Thanks in advance!

Our lives in the Great Outdoors floor. The RA arranged several outings for them–hikes, camps and a skiing trip, as well as a trip to the beach. There is one male and one female floor. He enjoyed it and said it was a nice option, even tho he was randomly assigned there. A friend signed up and lived in the GO floor previosly, and told our S he has enjoyed it, but S just lucked into the floor.

Thanks for the reply, HImom!

I actually just realized that transfers are not even guaranteed housing though. Ha! :stuck_out_tongue: So I wonder if it would be immensely difficult for me to get onto -any- of the special interest floors.

However, I will be a freshman transfer, so I wonder if that changes things! So many questions I need to ask when I call.

If you’re a freshman transfer, you may indeed have more options and I’d certainly ask about that if I were you.

Our D was a transfer–2nd semester sophomore and was lucky to be placed in Webb. It was slightly awkward because the other 3 in the suite had lived together for a term already when she moved in, but she managed to get along with everyone pretty well.

Gateway is a nice apartment if you can’t get into the dorms themselves, but I believe that all freshmen and sophomores are guaranteed SOME housing, if they request and put in a deposit early enough. Our D lived in Gateway JR year (it was a bit pricey but brand new).

Hi there, I am actually transferring OUT of USC, haha! You are correct in the assumption that you might not get housing - the unfortunate thing about going to such a large school is that there is simply not enough housing on campus for all continuing undergraduates, let alone the huge amount of graduate students and transfers. Off-campus housing is VERY expensive if you are like me and think that LA rent is crazy! Haha.

However, I can offer my two cents about the special interest floors.
While I did not live on any of the floors you are interested in, I did live on the Dance/Drama floor my freshman year. It was a great experience overall. My RA hosted several performance/arts trips around LA and on campus, and really tried to cultivate a sense of community on the floor. While my floor was very friendly and open, the floors below us (which were also special interest floors) complained that there wasn’t much sense of community at all. In the end, I guess it depends on your RA and your neighbors, but I would definitely recommend the experience!

My S and the guys on his GO! Floor stayed friends and would get together from time to time after freshman year. It does depend on the individuals living on the floor, of course, but the activities did help some with friendships and bonding.

Interesting. Thanks for the experiences so far! Anyone else?

The three I am most interested in are Women’s Wellness, Cinema, and Rainbow.

Women’s Wellness because I am very committed to eating healthy, partaking in specific exercise routines (it’d be ideal to have roommates that understand why I might, for instance, go to bed early and wake up early to go sprinting or weight training, and might be doing something similar themselves), and avoiding alcohol and drugs. I’m hoping to make friends at USC that share these interests and values. Of course I don’t expect all of my friends to and that’s fine, but I also would like to have at least some friends that would rather–for example–go for an evening jog around campus than get drunk at a party.

Cinema because I am an aspiring TV writer but I don’t plan to major in Screenwriting at USC. I do plan to minor in it though. I hear that the Cinema floor has prominent visitors from the entertainment industry and also has a community of people making films on the floor and such, and that all sounds fabulous!

I’m also interested in the Rainbow floor because, obviously, I am a member of the LGBT, am equally-obviously interested in dating women while at USC, and I get the impression that the Rainbow floor has a fun, passionate community. I could be wrong though!

I suppose the floors probably do change from year to year though, depending on the RA and the people living there, but any more experiences with these three floors or any of the others would still be appreciated!
