I was just wondering, if I were to apply to Northwestern's school of comm. or journalism, should most of my extra-curriculars relate to the area? (i.e. school newspaper, yearbook, etc) If I didn't have any experience in those areas, am I a risky applicant?

Regarding applying to Medill, any writing experience or leadership roles on school publications (ie Features Editor, Editor in Chief) definitely helps your chances of admission, but it is by no means required.

In this year's freshman journalism lecture, they openly said that they selected much of the class of '11 based on a demonstrated interest in journalism in their college apps. But what I have observed after talking to other students is that Medill admits two types of people:

a.) Those who were ridiculously involved with a publication in high school, or

b.) Those who have no prior journalism experience but are enthusiastic about Medill and had well-written app essays.

So no, it doesn't necessarily hurt you if you don't have prior writing experience . . . just make sure your college essays prove that you can write well!

it's always a good idea for your first few extracurriculars to align with your major of choice. Other extracurriculars that prove that you have breadth should also be included, though. good luck with apps!
