Obviously, I'm interested in Medill and yada yada yada. But I feel like I don't have enough experience with journalism to get accepted.
I took my journalism class sophomore year, and we have to take that class to get into the Newspaper class and write for the newspaper. So I've only been writing for the school paper for less than a year. I may also be getting an internship at my local weekly paper over the summer, but I can't imagine my experience with journalism in high school will expand beyond that all too much. Any advice?

Daughter’s in Medill and focused in HS on projects/programs dealing with language. She was newspaper editor, magazine contributor, mock trial member, debate club member and drama lead. She also spent a few weeks in the summer at a workshop for newspaper editors. That might have carried the day. You might look for something like that to show your initiative and to show you are dedicated to journalism.

Some Medill students arrive with absolutely no experience in journalism, but a lot of initiative and interest. Personally, I did journalism all four years of high school. At this point, I would say showing your interest and keeping at it is your best bet. Let me know if you have any questions!

My school has a radio/tv station and we send a lot of kids to Medill… all of them have taken the program all 4 years, interview local town officials, and have a lot of experience in creating news packages, radio packages, etc.

I’m sure it’s not all about experience, but it’d definitely help.
