Do you think it's a good idea to explain a drop in grades due to depression, adjusting to life away from home, an eating disorder, etc. in the 'additional information' section of the common app? My GPA is by no means horrible considering the classes I'm taking, but it isn't amazing compared to other students' either. I'm applying to most of the ivies, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Unless you have to report the depression and adjusting from home and eating disorder, I think it would be better to leave it off. In my opinion, it points out that you have emotional problems rather than helping to explain your grades. It’s also giving out the tone that you have bad grade when they may be perfectly fine otherwise. Have you talked to a guidance counselor? Make sure you ask the person for advice before putting this down.
