Explaining Educational Gap

I had a 4 year gap between highschool and my return to college. During this time I *ed around a lot. Played in band, worked *ty jobs, backpacked Europe, hopped freight trains across the south, hitchhiked coast to coast multiple times, moved to California from Seattle, went to concerts every night, smoked pot, the works. I had no intention of going back to school.

UC sent me an email asking me to tell them what I did during this time. Will what I say count against me? I have tag for UCSD, which is my first choice.

And also, what kind of details and/or proof do they want? Should I just say I worked random jobs or should I be extremely specific and include adresses, references and dates?

Any help is appreciated.

Their main goal is to ensure you didn’t omit a college with poor grades or something. I’d more of less say exactly what you just did, but frame it as a growing up, learning experience.

So, pretty much, if I tagged… nothing I can say in the explaination can affect their decision, right? I already answered this question in my original application in November. I wonder why they’re asking again?
