Explanation of Studio System

Hello all!

I was just wondering if someone could offer an explanation of Tisch’s studio system? I’m aware that your placed on entering but I was wondering if this is completely at random or if there is a way of letting them know because I was looking to get into the new studio. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I’m assuming that you are talking about musical theater? The New Studio (NSB) also has a track that is strictly acting, no MT. If it is MT, then you will audition for that, so it will be evident that NSB is your first choice. However, you will be asked whether you would be willing to placed in a different studio. If you don’t want to, then your decision will be based entirely on whether they want you in NSB.

The studio placement is based on the auditor’s and admissions committees decision. I don’t think it’s random; they seem to figure out what they think is the best fit for each.

There are musical theater opportunities beyond NSB; some studios have components that they teach, and Playwrights Horizons offers an MT track that students can enter for advanced training (after the primary studios – the first two years – students can change studios). I"m not that familiar with all the opportunities for MT at Tisch beyond NSB; soozievt can probably help you more with that, but as she will tell you and as I have seen, there are plenty of students at Tisch Drama who originally wanted MT, and remain outstanding talents, and still pursue MT.

You will have an interview with your auditor as part of the admissions process. I don’t think my D was asked about any studio preference (although she didn’t audition for MT), but you can probably bring it up if you want in your interview.
