I get it that there is much in society that is labeled “adults only”. What I don’t get is why the raunchy stuff is considered adult.
If I were a female employee at a business that played music like that, I’d think it created a hostile workplace. Why would people who wouldn’t tolerate language like that being used by a employee tolerate it in the music? Lucky for me the places I go play golden oldies from the 70’s.
Apparently you’ve never been to the UK or Ireland where family pubs are an integral part of the culture. When we lived there, we often spent many happy hours with other families enjoying the local brew while the kids ran around and played on the playground equipment. It was one of the things we missed most when we returned to the states. IMO, this country would benefit if there were more places where families could all enjoy time together. Bars are no substitute and certainly not meant to be family-friendly. Brew pubs could serve the same purpose as pubs but not when the brain-dead proprietors (like the one in the OP) are oblivious to the business they are driving away.
I’d have done the exact same thing the OP did whether I had children/teens or not with me. The lyrics are both obscene and misogynistic and I’d make very sure the manager knew why we were leaving and not returning. Mentioning the situation on Facebook or other social media would be a good idea.
Apparently the customers picked the music. It’s possible the Steel Panther groupies will come running!!!
I don’t get too worked up by the F words. It’s language that conveys hatred and disrespect for women which I find extremely offensive. Kids observe and take in much more than people realize.
No, I haven’t been to the Ireland or UK and experienced their brew pubs. I have been to Argentina where 10 year olds were served alcohol at the local corner bar just like everyone else. Perhaps since that’s ok there it makes sense to have it be normal here too? I’ve been to Japan where beer is dispensed from vending machines along the street just like sodas are here. Perhaps the US is missing out there too? I been to Germany and seen kids with their families at the beer gardens and large festivals. I didn’t see a problem with it.
I’m glad you at least confirm that bars are not necessarily meant to be family friendly. While I do agree that a brewery is different from an ordinary bar I don’t consider it as family friendly as perhaps the local steakhouse that also serves alcohol. Perhaps during the day many are. It wouldn’t necessarily shock me if they weren’t though.
I wonder if this is regional. The majority (not all) of craft breweries around us are very family friendly during the day. Games, food trucks, face painting, art areas, petting zoos, etc. are regular parts of the experience. Very different from a bar.
ETA: I’m not at all disputing your experiences or anyone else’s.
Also, I failed to address the premise of the thread. I would be very surprised to hear explicit music during the day at the family friendly breweries. I don’t blame the OP for speaking up.
I’ve been to numerous breweries locally and in other states when we’ve traveled. Also, pubs in Ireland, England, Scotland, etc. I truly WAS “shocked” as I had never heard anything like this before in any of them, in the middle of the day.
I have to wonder if this isn’t the exact reaction whoever requested the songs wanted.
Yes, possibly, especially when the couple of songs that were played when we first arrived were innocuous, then all of a sudden these two in a row that were so inappropriate( at least to me).
We go to a brewery usually about once a week locally , mostly after being out and about doing errands on the weekend and stopping on the way home for a quick craft brew. Or after doing some work at home on the weekend. Breweries are just something we have decided is interesting to check out and we like to get out of the house for awhile, get some fresh air, see some families and dogs! We have lots of local breweries and we like to rotate. We had not been to this one in months and decided to check it out again. Oh, well. It’s out of any rotation now!
My town has the most per capita breweries in our state I think. They are all family friendly - they are good burger and salad places that happen to brew their own beer. Many times folks go there and don’t even order alcohol. They have the atmosphere of a TGIFridays or Applebees but much better food and ambiance.
Oh my God that sounds horrible! I’d be pretty nervous if the guy with his hands in my mouth was second guessing himself audibly.
Steel Panther is in the news again with remarks about hiring a new bass player(you can Google it). I had never heard of them before I heard these songs in a brewery a few weeks ago. They are keeping to their usual schtick. They think they’re hilarious and some of it can be funny but it might be getting old in the me too era. They seem desperate to still seem relevant but that’s just my opinion. Good publicity though.
We went to a different local brewpub today on a beautiful day and sat outside, lots of kids and dogs. Music playing on outside speakers. Luckily, no songs like the two we heard before! I like comedy, parody, adult themes in films and music, etc. But feel there is a time and place for everything. And as I saw all these young kids running around, I realized I would say something again if I heard that kind of music in a space like that in the middle of the day.
Hope everyone has had a nice Labor Day weekend!
In the case of the aforementioned band, I don’t think there is ever a proper time and place for misogyny, which is what I saw in their lyrics.
I agree about misogyny and they are not the only ones out there with questionable lyrics and film , TV, print content. But, they have a fanbase and if those people want to pay money for their music or go to their concerts, they are probably still going to go. And, some of it is clearly parody, exaggerated. So, their fans will probably be the ones to decide if they still want to listen to their stuff. I am not about to tell other adults what to listen to or watch. Which may seem strange, since I started a thread about keeping young kids from hearing these kinds of lyrics!
There’s a newish local restaurant that blasts I find very explicit offputting “music” onto the sidewalk and parking lot of the shopping center. It has made me decide I’m never going to dine there. If they kept their sound system in their establishment, that’s one thing, but blasting it to the parking lot and sidewalk is beyond too much, even if it were ”music” we like
We went this afternoon to this very local place on the way home. H suggested we stop in. I was reluctant but was curious to see if the atmosphere was better. It was, jukebox was gone that was allowing people to play offensive music (to me) . Very busy, low music in the background. We ran into local friends. So glad to see the changes.
