Exploration Floors

What are the exploration floors actually like? They sound really interesting from the brochure, but I'd rather hear a student perspective.

My first choice for housing was Third North, so I'd particularly like to know about the ones offered there.

I'm not sure about the Explorations floors at Third North, so I can't answer your question there. But I do know that it basically depends what floor you're on, and how active your RA is. For instance, in Hayden this year there were three Exploration floors: Bohemians and Rebels, the NYU Show, and the French House. I never hear of residents of those floors doing anything much...I have friends on both floors and they never talk about doing anything (although I may be completely wrong about this, only saying the general consensus, please correct me if this is false). In the French House, however, we have an amazing RA and we have Faculty Fellows living on our floor, so we always are doing French related things around the city (all optional). So Explorations can be a really cool experience, but I don't think anything is guaranteed unless you live in Goddard, the Freshman Residential College, because all of their floors are Explorations and their dorm is basically designed for those types of programs. I hope more people on Explorations floors on CC talk about their experiences to supplement this post, because everyone's are truly very different, depending on how active the floor is, your RA, etc.

Hope that helps!

And P.S. if you apply Explorations, you're almost guaranteed your dorm of choice, because those floors are reserved for people who want that experience...something you might think about. Although that doesn't mean that you'll get placed into Explorations...a bunch of people were rejected last year from Hayden's French House. Be sure to place as your first choice a floor you're truly interested in, because if you choose a floor just because you want the dorm (and it's a particularly popular dorm), there might be a lot of applications for it and you might not get it and miss the chance for a floor that you truly wanted. That was all pretty confusing, I'm sure, but...yeah.

do you possibly know of other exploration floors (in 3rd North and U-Hall) that actually did something (had trips, etc.)? O and could mention what type of room they lived in?

I'm sorry, really the only Exploration floor that I really know about actually doing something is mine, the French House in Hayden (but that's because I live on it, haha...though the majority of Explorations floors CAN'T have bad/indifferent RAs otherwise there would be no point to having Explorations). I know that the kids in Goddard do a lot of things and are involved in community service, but that's because their dorm is all Explorations. I do know that the layout of the floors are the same; my floor in Hayden has the same layout as the other floors in the building, and U-Hall and Third North Explorations floors would have the same layout as any other floor in the building as well.

NOCCA Junior, do you know if there's a lot of competition for the explorations at Goddard?

No there's not, according to one of my Goddard friends from studio. If you apply and answer your essays, you're pretty much in.

thanks that's great! (hoping it's true since I applied)

Does anyone know anything about the FAME exploration floor at Brittany?
