Extended Deadline!

Hey guys...yesterday in the mail, I got a little post card from Swarthmore where they were telling me that I shouldn't be working on college apps over the holidays...i wonder how they knew.... ;) ...anyway, they extended my deadline until January 20th, and i was wondering if anyone else got one of these

I went to discovery weekend, but I'm not sure if that matters....

woa...can you please tell a little more about that? did you send in your swarthmore supplement already? (only have to do common app now) or have you not turned anything in?

I've turned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in yet! That's what's strange about it...it was a little blue postcard with a rhyme about college apps and doing them over the holidays and how they said I should be enjoying them rather than working over them. It said that they wanted me to perfect my application, so they gave me an extension...they said if I mail the postcard in with my app, I'll get a fee waiver (but they gave me one for going to Discovery Weekend too...)

I'd like to take them up on their offer to wait a couple of extra weeks to perfect my app, but my family says i should go ahead and send it in...

Also, they said that the ED2 deadline couldn't be extended....

It happened for my son as well in 2003....he applied RD at the extended deadline. He got in and got an early write as well. :)

achat, did he go to discovery weekend? I'm trying to figure out if Swarthmore maybe went through their mailing list and found applicants they like or something, but I really have no idea!

No, he didn't. But he identified himself as a minority (Asian-Indian) in a mail (postcard) he sent to Swarthmore. My son was too late for Discovery Weekend or anything of the sort...

Anyway, it wouldn't hurt for you to apply if you are interested. My son was always interested in Swat but did not apply because his GC told him it was a major major reach for him given that no one from his school had gotten in in the last few years..

That's pretty cool, does anyone know if Swarthmore extends the deadline for everyone or just a few select people?

im not sure about this, but my guess would be that they extend it for pretty much anyone...extending deadlines is a HUGE trend at swat, which you'll notice if you end up coming...nobody takes deadlines seriously for apps, papers, etc. everyones always late for stuff too.

Swat is so considerate :)

OK... since I haven't received anything yet from Swat, should I just submit my supplement (that's the only thing I haven't done yet) on 1/20 and they'll be okay with it?

haha...wow; I feel special ;)

Anyway, I got off to what I thought was a great start when I talked to the admissions counselors on day 1 of Discovery Weekend. But, I'm attributing this to minority status...., but I'm not sure! In addition, I live in Louisiana...an extremely underrepresented state in top colleges. In addition, I've tried to keep in touch with my host at Swat and the Admissions department. I haven't finished my research on Swarthmore yet, but do you guys know if they offer merit scholarships? I know that most top places don't because then...well...everyone would get a scholarsip!

kwyjibo, submit it all! You have to submit the postcard with your app if you're gonna submit it late. Had I not gotten the card, I would be cramming right now to try to finish my Swarthmore supplement. I'd love to go to Swarthmore...the location is awesome! I have a sibling at Penn who's a freshman right now, and it'd be cool to be so close, but not exactly there 24/7 so to speak. Swarthmore's one of my top three of my list (...it's just hard to get into any of my top 3!)

Lisa, that's great that Swarthmore doesn't take deadlines too seriously....I was never a deadline-lover; I've always felt that with more time, I could make anything I do better, and that's another one of Swarthmore's philosophies that I like!

Hmm...I'm still really curious about who they give these extensions too, though...

achat, by an early write, do you mean that they sent him his acceptance letter early or something? (BTW, I also identify myself as Indian)

Wow. Swarthmore is so freaking cool for doing that.

What if it was some sick practical joke, though...

wow; now I scared! I might just e-mail Suzi Nam and ask her about it...it gives her e-mail address at the bottom, and the thing is stamped by the postal service...I thought it could have been someone in my school (w/way too much free time on his/her hands!), but I seriously doubt it now. Anyway, I think it's sort of ironic that I got this thing becuase I'm always trying to convince my teachers to extend assignment deadlines...never getting them done, but always asking to have them extended!

Ha. My daughter told me a story about a friend who was offered an extension on a final paper and immediately told the professor, "NO! Don't offer me an extension. I'd rather just get the thing done...."

Heard of another professor who takes an innovative approach. His final exam is a take-home essay question with an eight page essay response due on a given day at 5:00 pm. If you don't turn in the paper by the due date, that option is null and void and you sit for a traditional scheduled exam the following evening. Needless to say, most students manage to turn in the paper on time. Amazingly, some don't.

previously, i have taken some classes from local colleges but i didnt send the transcripts yet. the local colleges are closed now and i can only send the transcripts after they open, which is after the deadline.
what should i do? despair?

Anonymous, yes, early write means they sent his acceptance letter on March 12th instead of April 1.

theoneonly, I would try putting in a word with them (Swat admissions office) that the transcripts might be a little late because the college is closed. And mention the college courses in your application.

i have to mention the college courses and grades in the application because the common application tells me to do so.
should i write in the "Addditional Comment" that the transcripts might arrive late rather than calling them?

You know, they aren't very unfriendly when you call them. At least that was my experience in 2003. Anyway, you should put it in 'Additional Comment' section.....just that circumstances are beyond your control.

As far as I remember, my son was late with his midterm transcript as well. He did not know that he was supposed to send them (talk about being lucky or clueless, whichever way you want to see it)! I called the admissions office (yes, dear old mommy) to verify that he needed to send it in. He sent it immediately but was late by a few days..
