How much do colleges take extenuating circumstances into consideration?
Thats a bit vague. Care to tell us a bit more? Extenuating circumstances affecting what? Grades? Course selection? Finances?
Affecting my grades junior year. Because of a financial problem I had to take a job for 7 hrs on the weekends and take over all my mom’s roles( she was injured) such as cooking, cleaning and so fourth.
*14 hrs–7 hrs each day
like Big Sean says “last night took an L but tonight I bounce back.” Extenuating circumstances can be painful and admission officers know. Having said that, if you can’t prove that you got over the hardships you faced, there are thousands of kids just like you. You got to take that step forward and fight to surmount your obstacles. If it gives you any faith, I fell flat on my face in high school. Went from B’s in freshmen year to C’s and D’s in my core classes junior year. Long story short, I fought my way through, and got into a good school
Well if it makes you feel better, I went from 3.6 to 2.8 gpa from sophomore to junior year. Rather than it affecting me, it had changed my whole work ethic around. Now I will be applying to schools like NYU and UC with community as a saftey. Just wanted to mention this to know your not alone and its nice to know theres others out there. Only thing that makes me stand out is my extracurriculars such as international paid internship in what i want to major and such.
You can ask you guidance counselor to mention it. But bottom line, be sure you apply to matches and safeties that match your actual stats, not what you would prefer them to be.
