My 9th grader has taken an interest in geography. She just learned the names, locations and shapes of all countries. Now she is trying to memorize world capitals. Is there an extra curricular activity/hobby/job/summer opportunity that would help grow her interest? I should add that she hasn’t expressed an interest in a particular country or region yet. She is trying out Model UN at her school but wondering if there’s anything else. TIA!
My son has this interest but look at college geography curriculums. Geography is really not what you described. But obviously that’s a great start. He’s minoring. It’s a lot about topography, weather and more.
Perhaps she can start a club at school. They can go in depth, bring in speakers to discuss certain cultures and regions of the world…a couple times a semester. They can go on group hikes.
My son entered a contest at his college - they had to find 20 species of trees. Take pics and note where they were.
If she started a club, it’d be great for acquiring leadership skills too. Good luck to her.
My younger S learned all the countries, flags, etc at an early age by playing FIFA. Although he went to school for a different major, he decided to double major in geographic science.
I am a civil engineer, but I also have been involved with GIS since the mid to late 90s. ESRI has a lot of activities for K12 students and a lot of cool maps in general. I’ve linked one page below, but you could probably find more there.
She should get involved in competitions:
