What could a Geography Club do?

So I want to start a Geography Club at my school, since I’ve always had a passion for flags, airports, and capitals. I know a great teacher that could be the advisor and I’ve filled out all the forms in order to begin, but I don’t know what this club would actually do in the meetings or on the weekends… I was setting the final goal to compete in Geography Bees against other schools, but I don’t know what to do until then. I’m guessing I need to train all the members in their geography skills in order to even be qualified to apply, but I don’t know how I’ll make them learn all the capitals, flags, and country shapes. I don’t want to shove it all in their face and tell them to memorize the world map because that wouldn’t be fun at all :frowning: Also, I want to do more things other than just “prepping” for the competitions, but I have no idea what I can do to occupy meeting times. Maybe I can show National Geographic once in a while, but I don’t what to play too many videos since anybody could do that at home and also we all wouldn’t be doing much ourselves.

So do you all have any suggestions of what this club could actually do? If there exists a Geography Club at your school, what does it do?

Btw I’ve known all my world geography since I was like 4 or something, so I do have the ability to “train” the members for the bees. I know all the flags, capitals, locations and shapes of countries. (I’m not trying to boast, sorry if it sounds like it) I just don’t know how to pass on this information in a fun way that would not bore or stress the hell out of everyone.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Parent here but with an idea…

What about getting some training using GIS (geographical information systems) tools. Using maping software is fun and interesting. GIS is a good skill for employment and you may be able to do some volunteer work using GIS for non profits. (An example locally. I am involved in a large Facebook group trying to map all coyote sightings and attacks in our city because our pets are being eaten. This would be something a geography club would be able to really help with.)

Check with local user groups and see if they have any free trainings. You can often get the software for free as a student. GIS is an up and coming skill.

Good luck with whatever your decide.

get your club to compete in the GeoBee. Not sure about the registration process, but my entire school competed for it in 6th grade (class winners, sectional grade winners, grade winner, state competition, could go all the way to nationals). It is hosted by National Geographic I think.

The GeoBee isn’t for high school students. However, there is an International Geography Olympiad: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Geography_Olympiad
And it looks like the US participates.
