Hello!
I’m an international student and I’m a bit worried about my ECs because I don’t have much time to work on them. Some ECs that I have participated in are:
A) I’ve been on the school basketball team for the past 5 years
B) Baking is my hobby and I’ve had a couple of stalls during some fests and made profits
That’s pretty much it. I’m planning on playing tennis and learning an instrument also. I’ve also done some volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.
I have only one exceptional achievement, I was ranked 17 internationally in the International English Olympiad.
Is there anything I can do? I know ECs are supposed to represent my passion but are there any you could recommend?
Are you applying for the Class of 2021? Then I’m afraid you don’t have much time to improve your ECs.
However, if you still think you can improve your ECs:
I think concentrating on these three is your best option, because they say that it’s better to be exceptional at certain things than to be okay at a lot of things. If you try out a lot of different activities in the last few months of your high school universities will know that you’re doing it for the admissions process, and not because you’re genuinely passionate about these things. If I was in your place, I would concentrate on the baking and basketball, but mostly the English ECs- because like you said, one of your exceptional achievements is your ranking in the Olympiad. What you could do is check for other English Olympiads and/or other extracurricular English based events. 17th is a great achievement indeed, and the more you succeed in this field, the better.
@forthewin85 I’m currently a sophomore
And thanks a lot
I would also concentrate on the basketball and the baking.
I think when you apply you could do your essays like recipes.
Baking is not a typical EC, it stands out and you should try to continue to develop that skill. Have you noticed the baking and cooking shows? It’s popular in the community.
@“aunt bea” Thanks for your input. Also, when you say community, what are you referring to?
In the US, there are lots of baking/cooking shows. Very popular in the local and national “community”.
