I’m about to be a junior this fall, and I’m worried about my ecs. I haven’t been able to really focus on any of my interests because of some issues at home, but I need to know where to start. I understand that colleges like to see a candidate with depth in 1 or 2 ecs, but I’m not sure how to start off with mine. I enjoy cooking and baking, playing soccer, and playing an instrument (although I’m not that great).
Those sound like fine ECs to me if you’re truly passionate about them though I’d be curious about how others here perceive them. If you have an essay asking about your ECs, talk about why you like cooking and baking! They are pretty unique compared to some other activities kids write about. Don’t feel pressured to have some extraordinary EC, most freshmen college students weren’t rocket scientists in high school. Just make sure to explain the issues at home in the Common App.
I 100% agree with @syrxis . I think that admissions officers will be able to see that you actually enjoyed involving yourself in those activities instead of doing them because it looked good.
Play soccer in a local, league if you don’t play with school. Participate in recitals put on by local music stores. Volunteer to play your instrument at an old people’s home. Bake some cakes and cookies and sell them as a fundraiser for a youth soccer league or a music charity. Teach neighborhood kids how to bake. Teach neighborhood kids how to play your instrument. Contact your local AYSO and vounteer as a ref. Think outside the box.
