Extra-curriular activities

Hi!
I'm an international student from the Netherlands and I have a question on ECs. Now, is a volunteer job an ec or work experience? Or could you list it at both?
I'd like to ask the same about this special college program I'm doing at the university of Leiden. Basically, it's a program for 'talented' students and they had a whole application process and admitted about 50% of the applicants. All the applicants also had to have a A- GPA. I'll be spending four hours there every monday. So would you call this an academic honor or extra-curricular activity?
Thank you! :D

Volunteer job is EC. If you are interested in pursuing a career in the field that you were volunteering in, you can use it for work experience. In fact, it would be better to show how volunteering is not only benefiting others, but also yourself in that light. For the special college program, it could go either way as well. Since ECs usually refer to committed activities and academic honors are more award-orientated, I would put it down for EC and include a note or elaborate later on the selectivity.

Do youthink I should let my guidance counselor write about the program in his letter of recommendation? Or would a specific note be better?
