Unofficial Volunteering

Can volunteer work that isn't on record be used as ECs? I was ignorant about the importance of ECs at the time and never bothered with it.

The activities section is meant to be a space where you can show colleges what consumes your time outside the classroom. The activities you list can be formal sports or clubs or informal things for which there is not documentation, like volunteering, family obligations, or even your significant hobbies.

Then don’t replace it with the insufferable myth that ECs and volunteer hours are required to get into any college. For +80% of colleges, they don’t care one bit about ECs or vol hours.

Only the extremely selective ones give a nudge to outstanding ECs in their pools of highly qualified academic applicants.

Thankyou all so much! Do UC schools take ECs into account also?

Most of the volunteer work I did, I never officially recorded. Hours are meaningless, what you learn and experience is what matters. I wrote about some volunteer experiences in my commonapp essay that I didn’t include elsewhere.

UC schools, like other state schools are more stat-focused but still consider applications holistically.

Thank you!!!
