I've heard that it can be helpful to schools for a student to send extra recommendations from coaches, youth ministers, club sponsors, etc who know her work ethic or character or something else about that student well. Is it a good idea to send maybe 3 recs--2 from academic teachers and one from a figure skating coach? Not one from a family member or something, but someone who knows you in the context of your extracurricular life. Has anyone tried this?

I would think if the person that was not a teacher had something that they had seen that the teachers did not have a chance to see and they were able to articulate it well then it may be worth sending. Otherwise I would stick to what they ask for.

yes, that’s a good idea but maybe you should also send a rec. letter from your counselor.

Agree w/ UTPG that yes only if there is something meaningful to add. Overselling can be seen as an attempt to compensate for weaknesses. Remember the adage, “the thicker the file, the thicker the applicant”.
